Grapefruit wasn’t the first essential oil I added to my collection; in fact, I didn’t get it until a couple of years after I started using essential oils. However, once I purchased it, I have never let it run out since.

Cold-pressed from the peel of the grapefruit, it has the most beautiful, tangy yet sweet aroma. I am a bit obsessed, especially when it comes to diffuser blends.

But that isn’t the only use for grapefruit essential oil! Let’s dive into the many ways you can add grapefruit oil to your routine.

How to Use Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit is a bright and citrussy essential oil that adds a cheery scent to diffuser blends, roller bottle blends, skincare products, and cleaning products.

Its two main uses are aromatic use (diffusing it into the air) and topical use (applying it to the skin, diluted).

Aromatic Use

The most popular way to use essential oils aromatically is through a diffuser. You can also get aromatic benefits just by breathing essential oils straight out of the bottle, making a room spray, or putting a few drops on your clothing or a homemade diffuser necklace

I love adding grapefruit essential oil to diffuser blends (see my favorite diffuser blends). Grapefruit essential oil is commonly used for aromatherapy benefits, and with its tangy citrus scent, it can add a bright and cheery feel to your home.

The amount of oils you add to your diffuser really depends on the room size you are diffusing in and on your personal preference.

For a bedroom or small room, I typically do 4-6 drops of essential oil. In a larger room, I do 8-10 drops of essential oil.

Grapefruit essential oil can be added to roller bottles, lotions, and creams to apply topically onto the skin. Always be sure to dilute your essential oils before using them topically.

It’s important to note that grapefruit essential oil is a photosensitive oil, so it can cause sensitivity to UV rays when used topically. Because of this, avoid direct sun exposure for 24 hours after applying grapefruit essential oil to the skin.

How to Make a Roller Bottle with Grapefruit Essential Oil

To make a roller bottle, you will need an empty roller bottle, a carrier oil, and essential oil. I typically add 20-25 drops of essential oil to a 10mL rollerball and top it off with a carrier oil.

Uplift your space

Grapefruit’s bright and tangy aroma adds a warm and inviting feeling to a room. Diffusing grapefruit essential oil is a great way to uplift a space and brighten the mood.

Add a crisp, clean scent

I really like to diffuse citrus oils when I’m cleaning because their fresh scent makes a room instantly feel cleaner. It’s a great way to freshen the air and reset your house.

DIY cleaning products

Grapefruit essential oil is a wonderful addition to homemade cleaning products, such as all-purpose cleaner and homemade window cleaner. It gives the cleaners a boost and makes them smell crisp and fresh.

Use it in hair care

Add grapefruit essential oil to your hair care products to provide additional benefits and give them a clean, refreshing scent. Grapefruit essential oil can even help with hair growth. You can add it to DIY hair oil, homemade shampoo, or hair serum.

Make a room spray

The quickest way to get grapefruit essential oil into the air is to spritz a homemade room spray. You can use just grapefruit or add it to a blend, like one of the diffuser blends listed above.

Mood booster

On gloomy, dreary days, I like to diffuse essential oils that smell like summer. Grapefruit essential oil always lifts my spirits, energizes me, and makes it feel like a warm, sunny day.

All-natural bug repellent

You can add grapefruit essential oil to your homemade bug repellent spray for an added boost. The smell of citrus repels insects, so grapefruit essential oil is the perfect way to keep the bugs away naturally.

Natural fragrance

Essential oil is a natural way to add a lovely scent to your home. Add grapefruit essential oil to homemade scented candles, DIY air fresheners, or a cozy simmer pot to add a burst of citrussy goodness to the air.

Homemade soap

Citrus oils add a wonderful scent to homemade soaps โ€” especially grapefruit! Add it to your soap bars, homemade face wash, and DIY liquid hand soap for an invigorating and uplifting scent every time you wash up.

Laundry detergent

I like adding grapefruit essential oil to my DIY laundry soap to give my clothes a crisp, fresh scent. You can put a few drops in a laundry scent booster or onto a wool dryer ball for even more fragrance.
