This recipe is actually quite simple, and as I said, you only need a few ingredients. I am going to share a couple of variations, including several essential oil blends to choose from.
For the base, I am using shea butter; of course, we will need a carrier oil, which I use fractionated coconut oil, and lastly, essential oils. Your skin type will determine which carrier oil and essential oils you will want to use.
To make the lotion, you will need a glass bowl, saucepan, and glass airtight container for storage.
CAN I USE COCONUT OIL ON MY FACE AS A MOISTURIZER?
I use coconut oil on my face every day, and I often get asked if it causes breakouts. If you google it, you will get several different opinions on this. Clearly, I am on the “it’s good for the face” bandwagon.
I do not find it to clog my pores or cause breakouts. In fact, I find it to do the opposite. My skin is very soft and clear. I use fractionated coconut oil as a makeup remover every night before bed, and it works great. It is gentle enough to apply close to the eyes to remove eyeliner and mascara.
I use coconut oil for a makeup remover; it is in my homemade face wash and moisturizer. It is also found in my whipped body butter and lotion bars. I basically slather in the stuff, and my skin thanks me for it.
WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS CAN I USE ON MY FACE?
Essential oils are very concentrated and potent. Diluting them before using them topically is important, especially when using them on the face. The face has sensitive skin, and if you put essential oils straight on the face, it may cause some irritation.
I use a few essential oils straight on my face, but I wouldn’t recommend starting that way, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Yarrow Pom is my absolute favorite essential oil for my face. I have only had this essential oil for a little over a year, but I have used it on my face almost daily since I received it. It has a beautiful deep blue color and has powerful anti-aging properties. This essential oil was the first one I added to my face moisturizer recipe.
I like to stick to gentle essential oils on the face, like yarrow pom.
CHOOSE YOUR ESSENTIAL OILS

- Rose– great for sensitive skin, fine lines, crows feet, and wrinkles

- Sandalwood– great for all skin types

WARNING: If using citrus essential oils on the face, avoid direct sunlight for 24 hours due to photosensitivity.
NATURAL FACE MOISTURIZER INGREDIENTS
SHEA BUTTER
Shea butter is the ultimate skin moisturizer. It is often used in lotions and other conventional cosmetics. Shea butter is incredible for dry skin and can even be extremely helpful for cracked skin.
It can be used to even out skin tone, lessen acne scars, tighten skin, and improve skin discolorations. Other options for the base include cocoa butter or mango butter.
CARRIER OIL
This recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of oil. You have several options here. I prefer to use a combination of jojoba oil and fractionated coconut oil. These carrier oils have a mild scent and are very moisturizing for the skin.
Other carrier oil options include argan oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, hemp seed oil, or rosehip oil. Read more on carrier oils to decide which one is best for your skin.
Mason Jars for Storage
I like to store my homemade body butter in short mason jars with wide mouth lids. These make it easy for getting out every last bit of your body butter.
ESSENTIAL OILS
The added essential oils will help with anti-aging, acne, dry skin, or oily skin. It will also add a beautiful scent.
For this recipe, I am using 10-15 drops of essential oils. I prefer to use a blend of oils. Below are a few of my favorites!
CLEAR SKIN
- 5 drops frankincense
- 5 drops lavender
- 5 drops tea tree

Laura says
You’re welcome! Enjoy!
Toni says
What a clever idea! Can’t wait to try this (great gift idea too).
Laura says
Thank you! I love the idea of giving it as a gift.
Ashley says
Does this take a while to set up? Mine has been made for 1.5 hrs and still liquid just as I poured it.
Laura says
Yes, it does take a while, especially at room temp. I put mine in the freezer or fridge to speed up the process. Just be sure to watch that it doesn’t get too hard, especially if you plan to whip it up.
Ashley says
Thank you so much! It was perfect the next morning and I LOVE IT!
Laura says
YAY! I am so glad!!
elaine anderson says
Does the smell of the shea butter go away once essential oils are added and cooled as im not loving the smell of the shea butter🙈
Laura says
You can use cocoa butter instead if you like that smell better.
Meaghan says
Hi there, should this be used day or night time. Also can you wear make up over this?
Laura says
You can do it either, but I prefer using moisturizer at night. Yes, you can out makeup over it. I always apply essential oils to my face before doing my makeup. 🙂
Jacqueline says
Hi Laura!
I love your blog and natural living home recipes for everyday living. I have already tried several including your sister Lisa’s. I absolutely love the natural products, they are wonderful to use, and so easy to make in your own home!
I wanted to know where on your website I can print off the labels for each one that I am making?
I have already tried the roller bottles, whipped body butter, lip balms, and more!
I enjoy following along…thanks so much for sharing!

Jelsey says
Thank you for all the great recipes. What is the benefit of using Shea butter with the carrier oils? I have been using jojoba oil as a moisturizer and I just put it directly on my face with some essential oils mixed in. I am really curious about Shea butter and I am willing to try it. Thank you for your time.
Laura says
You’re welcome! I am so glad you are enjoying my blog and recipes! Using jojoba oil and essential oils are great! I had several requests for face lotion and this is the kind I love. I have a whole section in the blog post where I talk about shea butter and why I like it in this recipe. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Jelsey says
Thank you Laura!
Nichole says
Hi. After it’s all settled and cooled you can take it out of jar and whip it up then put it back? Do you recommend this?
Laura says
Yes, you can! I personally like to whip it, but you don’t have too.
Nichole says
Sorry one more question. Might sound silly but how do you whip it? By hand or a hand blender? Thanks
Laura says
Not a silly question at all! I use a hand mixer. 🙂
Michelle says
I’m confused. Your directions didn’t say to whip it so I didn’t. The color turned out yellow not the creamy white that shows. I followed the directions.
Laura says
Whipping it is optional, as it will still work just fine without doing that. Whipping it will make it fluffy like the pictures.
Nichole says
Silly question but do you use a hand mixer to whip it? Thanks
Laura says
Yes!
Maria says
Great post! A lot of great information. I love making my own body products!
Laura says
Thank you so much!
Laura says
I made this last week. I found it very gritty, even after whipping. What do you think happened? Is there anything I can do to fix It? Thank you for your help!
Laura says
I am so sorry it did that! Did you melt the shea butter before adding the other ingredients? That is the only ingredient that may have made it gritty. Also, did you use the same shea butter that I had linked in the post? I am sure it will still work great even if the texture isn’t perfect. You can also try remelting it and whipping it again and see if that helps.
Karen says
What is yarrow pom oil? Can I use an alternative oil?
Love your recipes! Thank you for sharing.
Laura says
Thank you so much! It is a blend by doTERRA that I am obsessed with! It is the best oil for skin, however, it is pretty pricy. If you don’t have it I can help you get it for wholesale pricing or you can eliminate it from the recipe and just add extra of another oil.
Tina says
Hi!
My current face lotion contains spf. What do you do about sun exposure on your face?
Thanks!!
Laura says
I have a sunscreen recipe on my blog you can check out! I also prefer to wear hats when I am going to be out for extended periods of time.
Julie says
How do you know the quality of the Shea butter you buy online? Do you have to lookout for a particular brand to create the best products?
Laura says
I am sure you can find a bad kind, I check the ingredient list and reviews!
Alizah says
Would you say this moisturizer is good for oily skin? I am scared it’s going to cause my skin to look greasy and clog my pores.
Laura says
I think so! A little goes a long way. I love the way it makes my skin feel.
Salicia says
Can you link recommended jars to buy for storing this in? Thank you so much for these recipes, such a great help for me and my family!!
Laura says
Yes! Just added the link!
Matt says
Love this article! I’be used similar ingredients for making a beard balm, So I’m super interested in making this as well. I just have a quick question: when the Shea and carrier oils are melting and then you put the essential oils, is there a good way to make sure it’s spread evenly as the butter solidifies? I just want to make sure all the oil doesn’t just rest at the bottom.
Laura says
Thank you! I whip it with a hand mixer and that keeps it from separating.
Ava says
Sorry this might be an obvious answer but, do you whip it right after you put in the essential oils or after it cools?
Laura says
I add the essential oils when it is cool and then whip it.
Jersey says
Laura these are great tips and recipes. I use coconut oil, Shea butter and tea tree for every thing. Thanks for sharing.
Laura says
That is a great combo for anything skin related!
Elise says
This is such a great tutorial! Over the past few years my skin has changed so much and now it is so dry and needing moisture!! Will have to try some of these moisturizers!!
Laura says
Thank you! I love the way it works and makes my skin feel. 🙂
Jen says
I was literally looking for a face cream recently and I stumbled on this. Think I will give this one a try. Thank you!
Laura says
I really love the way it makes my skin feel!
Geri says
Is there part of the instructions missing you will need to let harden then mix to get to the consistency as in the picture
Laura says
You will want it to cool slightly to thicken before whipping it. You don’t want it to harden completely, just slightly. Does that make sense?
Aleksandra says
What would be the difference in the final outcome between simply leaving it to settle or to whipp it? I’m looking for consistency which I could squeeze through cake sleeves with a nose into container for nice visual effect as well as the physical benefits
Laura says
It just changes the consistency. It works the same either way. That sounds like a great idea!
Julie says
I made this recipe and accidently put too much almond oil in, (the bottle slipped a little as I was measuring out the Tablespoon.) i continued to finish but it is a little oily, how can I remedy this? remelt and add a pinch of beeswax? Will blending it help?
Laura says
Yes you can try that, can you drain any oil off the top?
Joanna says
Bit confused.
The instructions don’t outline what to do once the mixture has cooled. Just to “add essential oils”. Do you need to whisk it? Use a blender to emulsify it? If you just let the melted oils cool and add essential oils, you will just have a bowl of solidified oils. Can you clarify?
Laura says
You can use it as is, or you can whip it with a hand help mixer if you prefer. The only diofference is the texture. Works great both ways!
Jay says
Thank you for this, really helpful. Was wondering though, is it necessary to whip the oils before it can be used? Or can it be used in its oily form?
Laura says
Either way is fine, it just changes the texture!
Rose says
Thanks alot, God bless you.
Julie M Chapman says
Ok, made a second batch and I followed your recipe to a “T” and even whisked it vigorously before I put into jar. Came out very firm, not “lotiony” like the picture, not sure what happened there. I also did you “after sun soothing lotion” and that turned out great! Kinda want to get a little sunburn to test out!! (just kidding) Any tips on how I can make the face moisturizer a little softer would help.
Laura says
Haha, I am so glad you like it! For the face moisturizer, did you use a hand mixer to mix it? You can try adding less beeswax.
Julie M Chapman says
No I just used a whisk
Laura says
Try a mixer!
Kylie Davison says
Hi there! I’m getting my ingredients ready to make this! Can’t wait. I’m also wanting to buy a nice jar to pop it in. How much does this recipe make? What size jar should I buy? And can I pop the lid on once it’s all cool and whipped? Thankyou so much. Can’t wait to try this.
Laura says
Great! It makes a little more than half a cup. I have everything I used to make it linked in the post!
Sofia says
Hi there,
Thanks for sharing the recipe! Do you know how much this yields approximately?
All the best.
Laura says
About a half of a cup
Pattie B says
Is there a way to make it softer. I do melt in my hand before applying just would like it to be more creamer.
Laura says
You can whip it with a hand mixer to make it very light and fluffy. Do it after it sets up.
Sal says
Thank you so much for sharing. How long does this typically last or would you recommend adding a natural preservative? If so, what would you add?
Laura says
You can add vitamin E oil for a natural preservative.
Farah says
Hi Laura..
Thank you for sharing the recipes.. I want to ask, is it ok if I use only single essential oil (I only use lavender oil) ? And is it ok if I use sweet almond oil + deodorized coconut oil ?
Thank you for your answer 💞
Regards
from Indonesia
Laura says
Yes, any essential oil and carrier oil will work the same in the recipe. Lavender is great for the skin!
brinda gannon says
Is there a way to add sunscreen to this?
Laura says
I have a homemade sunscreen recipe on the blog with zinc oxide. You can add that in to make it SPF!
Lizzy says
Hi Laura,
Mine is a sensitive skin. I am scared to use shea butter on my face. Can I use only Mango butter along with the carrier oils?
Thanks
Laura says
Yes you can! I have a mango butter whipped butter recipe too!
Kelly says
I have followed the directions you have written and have a question. I poured in a couple of small jars and will wait for it to harden. After it hardens do I need to take it back out and use beaters to “whip” it? Then put it back in? I’m sorry if this is a silly question. Thanks for posting it this recipe and will be going to see what else you make 🙂
Laura says
If you want to whip it I would suggest doing that first and then put it in your storage jars. 🙂
Jayda says
After you put it in the storage jars do you put it in the fridge after?
Laura says
It can stay at room temp. If your house is warmer than 75 degrees it will melt, in which case I would store in the fridge.
Andrea says
Hi Laura
I was just reading your face moisturiser instructions and noticed that you’ve omitted the step of whipping it. Don’t know if this was intentional or not but the photo definitely looks whipped to me.
Just a curious Aussie – thanks Andrea x
Laura says
It is optional! I mention it in the post, either way, works great it just depends on the texture you prefer.
Adeela says
does it have an expiry date? how long does it last?
Laura says
Good for one year.
Hannah says
I’m super excited to try this recipe! I have acne prone skin but I really don’t like using store bought, chemical laden moisturizers. One question—would it be ok to use the solid kind of coconut oil (the kind used for cooking) instead of fractionated? That’s what I have on hand at the moment.
Laura says
It will change the texture. Fractionated stays liquid and regular is solid.
Debra Berg says
What can I replace the Yarrow Pom with?
Thanks, Deb Berg
Laura says
Lavender, frankincesnse, and tea tree are a few of my favorites.
hems says
I like this recipe. However can i add vitamin E and beeswax to this? How much quantity would you recommend? Is it a day cream? Thnanks
Laura says
I have a day cream with those ingredients you may want to check out: https://www.ouroilyhouse.com/diy-anti-aging-face-cream/
Tiffany says
First timer making facial cream. Followed your recipe and it came out perfectly. A bit oily but I have seen your suggestions now to add Arrowroot Powder to assist with that. My question is – how can you keep it soft and creamy? It was lovely when I first whipped it but the next day it was very hard. Had to scrape the cream off and then melt between fingertips before applying to face. How can I make it constantly soft & creamy? I look forward to hearing your tips in this area. Very keen to try it again.
Laura says
If you whip it with a hand mixer it will stay light and fluffy.
kathy Deyoe says
i did that and it hardened very hard like the original consistency of the shea butter , and i did all the measurements correctly
Laura says
You can whip it with a hand mixer to make it light and fluffy.
Marloes says
Hi, thanks for the inspiring recipe. In The Netherlands we don’t use ‘cups’ to measure. Do you know how much Shea butter you use in grams? Of even in table spoons (assuming that they are equal all over the world…)
Thnx
Rachel Beckham says
I’m interested in trying this recipe! Does the pH match the pH of our face (4.5-5.5)?
Jackie says
Where should I store the face cream? Refrigerator or room temp? Thanks!
Laura says
I keep it at room temperture.
Jayda says
How long do you keep it there for? And do you store it in the container or the bowl you were using? And do you whip it before or after you store it?
Laura says
I whip it before I store it and keep it in an airtight container. It will last for 6 months.
Sylvia says
Hello, what essential oils are safe for people with tachycardia? I would like to make face moisturizing blends and sun spot treatment. I have researched but the info I found is only related to ingesting and not topical use. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated
Sabera Shabbir Kapasi says
Hi there. Thank you for your efforts and sharing, specially kping it simple and practical. Do u think it would be ok to use around the eye and surrounding soft sensitive as well?
Kind regards,
Ssk
Sabera Shabbir Kapasi says
I mean soft eye skin* as usually company products with additives are avoided around the eye… Am a newbie to skin care. So pls excuse the silliness of my question.
Laura says
Yes, but make sure not to get it in the eyes.
Karen says
I see yarrow pom is a blend of yarrow and pomegranate oil. If i have the 2 oils separately, can I mix them together, and if so, what should the ratio be to get to yarrow pom oil mentioned in your recipe?
Laura says
Yes, you can do that too! I would do equal parts.
Maria says
Where to buy arrowroot powder, which brand is best or good to use in your anti-aging face cream recipe.
Laura says
I have the kind I use linked in the post.
Amy says
I have been using this for 4 days and I noticed two pimples appearing. I used it with coconut water body jelly and add a bit too much coconut oil.
Is this why pimples are forming?
Sarah says
I now see that your youtube video says 1/4 cup of avocado oil (which equals 4 tablespoons) and your website says 1/8 cup which is equal to 2 tablespoons…!!!!!
Please confirm which is correct.
thanks so much.
Laura says
I will have to look into that, it should be 1/8 cup as the website says. Thanks!
Naomi says
Love your recipes! Can I use lavender infused oil instead of the jojoba oil and or fractionated coconut oil in this recipe? It was made with olive oil, sunflower oil and fresh lavendar buds then left to infuse and strained.
Laura says
Yes, that sounds great!
Agatha says
Can I add other oils into that mixture? Small amount of Vitamin E, Sweet Almond Oil and vegetable glycerine? I would like to use it as a night moisturiser. I can imagine that it might change consistency into more watery then.
Tatiana Barnes says
I made a natural face moisturizer following your recipe. Unfortunately the mix never solidified, and I had to make a different one and mix them up to save it. I would appreciate your response! Thank you.
Laura says
Place it in the fridge to allow it to solidify and then whip with a hand mixer.
Devi says
hi
can I use just yarrow essential oi and is the quantity the same?
Laura says
Yes you can!
Kat says
I just came across your page and am amazed how similar our recipes are for the face moisturiser. I’ve been using Doterra essential oils for the last 7 years and using them to create homemade natural face and body products. I love this recipe and blend as well. I used coconut oil and some sweet almond oil for my base. I was just going to try Jojoba oil today and came across your page in my research. So excited to try this recipe but will tweak it with my blend. I’ll let you know it turns out!! Keep sharing and inspiring!! Thanks xx
Laura says
I am so glad you are enjoying the recipes!!

Hi Laura whats the difference in the face moiturizer and the anti age face cream?
Tracy says
Can I put a little vitamin E oil and vegetables glycerin in as natural preservatives? How long is the shelf life? Will it give it a longer shelf life by adding them?
Laura says
Yes, you can! It is good up to one year.
Antonette says
Love this! I made recipe using the anti-aging oils. It’s been about 2 weeks and I have noticed a very pleasant difference. My skin is brighter and looks like I have makeup on but I don’t. Thank you for this recipe and all your recipes!
Laura says
I am so glad you are loving it!
Stacey says
I just use straight up Jojoba oil on my face to moisturize. I used to use some lavender and frankincense, but then all of a sudden I had this rash on my hands that wouldn’t go away. I tried everything I could think of until my husband suggested avoiding all essential oils for a while. Between that and a prescription from my doctor, the rash went away. My hands were literally cracking and swollen and so painful. So I no longer use any essential oils on my skin unless absolutely necessary. Jojoba oil works amazingly well on it’s own.
Favour says
Very lovely recipe.
I’ll love to make for myself soon
Sue Nawaz says
Hi there, is there any other oil I can use in place of sandalwood?
Thanks
Luaufeet says
Thanks for the information. I’m a man in the construction industry so I find myself in the field working in the outdoors mostly. Was looking for a more natural approach to skin care. My skin gets so dry in the winter. Thank you
Claire says
Hi Laura, I want to use rose hip oil and wondered how much would be the right amount? Thank you!
Laura says
You can replace any carrier oil with the carrier oils I used with equal parts. So, if you are using only rosehip, instead of the two I mentioned in the recipe you will want to use 2 tablespoons.
Tony says
Hi Laura.
How might I go about adapting this slightly for the addition of Vitamin E oil (30,000 IU)?
I’ve whipped up a couple of the recipes as you have listed then and they are a big hit with family members, one proclamation that it’s the best cream ever! (from a 75year old that’s tried many , many creams). So thank you for sharing.
I wanted to add the vitamin E to make a cream for our dogs (Airedale terriers) and also wondered if the quantity of the oils needed to be reduced? What do you think?
Cheers, Tony
jean says
Hi. For the Natural Face Moisturizer, I don’t have Yarrow Pom, can I add more of the sandalwood and lavender?
If I was to skip the lavender and Yarrow would I use 15 drops of sandalwood.
Thank you, I love your recipes.
Laura says
Yes you can!
Lydia says
Hi Laura
I love your blog but unfortunately for me most of your ingredients are not readily available and those which are , are quite expensive.I live in Ghana, Africa.
Nonetheless, I read them and save them for future use when I can actually afford these ingredients.
Catherine says
Hi there! I have just made a batch of face cream using your recipe and it looks great and feels great but it leaves my face with a very oily sheen. Is there something I can add to it (I have already whipped it up) that will help make it less oily?
Laura says
Yes, you can add a little arrowroot powder and re-whip it. Also, you only need a small amount when you use the face moisturizer.
Rena says
How solid should it be before you whip it?
Laura says
Not totally solid, I test it by pressing my thumb into the mixture and see if it holds the indent.
Maria says
My face is getting dark spots
Lorraine Gall says
I have a question, my husband is allergic to lots of smells. Can this be made without the essential oils?
Laura says
Yes!
kathy Deyoe says
is it suppose to get hard after you whip it? i followed the recipe i replaced the fractionated coconut oil with almond oil and it cooled down to be very hard, is this correct?
Laura says
No, it should not be really hard. It does become solid, but a soft solid.
Rose says
I will give it a tryer
Gemma says
Hi there! I followed your instructions but it’s cooled down to an oil. How do I get it more creamy like your photo?
Laura says
You need to let it set up and then whip it with a hand mixer. It should not be a liquid once cooled.
Jack says

I was reading on another blog and she said that, “ Without a preservative, any DIY beauty recipe that has a water-based ingredient will grow bacteria and mold after just a few days.“
Is this accurate? Do I need to worry about that for this Recipe? I just made some and now I’m worried about if it’s safe to use.
Laura says
There is no water in this recipe
Alaa Azhari says
That’s very useful thanks can you add Kojic acid to it ?
Sarah says

How much do you get from 1 batch?
Laura says
Its right at 5 oz!
Amy Roberts says
Good morning. I love to read your face care recipes.
One question. I want to make this face moisturizer/night cream, but what can be used instead of Shea Butter. Personally I can’t stand the smell of it. But if it’s the best hopefully the coconut oil and essential oils will lessen the smell of the Shea Butter. I looke forward to your reply.
God Bless.
Laura says
Thanks so much! You can use cocoa butter instead. It will be a little bit harder but still work well.
Joanne says

After my drug-store night moisturizer changed (the shopping-list length of ingredients on the label was unchanged, but it smelled different and my skin was drying out), I thought I’d try making my own.
Your recipe was so easy to follow and I was amazed that I was able to make my OWN moisturizer!
I just used the essential oils I had on hand (lavender, rose hip, and sweet orange) and it smells wonderful.
Thank you so much for sharing this information, I can’t wait to try more of your skincare recipes 🙂

Which moisturizer would you recommend for dry skin/ rosacea?

Hi Laura,
Your instructions say “ Set the glass bowl over a pot of water to create a double boiler.” Do you put a lid over the glass bowl while it’s in the pot? And am I supposed to put a lid over the pot?
Laura says
No lids at all. Just set the glass bowl over the saucepan so that it’s resting on the sides of the saucepan. Make sure that there is enough water in the saucepan to submerge the glass bowl in at least an inch of water.
