(Refer to recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact measurements.)

Add the essential oils and witch hazel to a glass spray bottle. It is always best to use glass when making anything with essential oils, as the oils can break down plastic over time.

Top off the spray bottle with water, secure spray top, and shake well to combine all ingredients

Mist into the air as needed. You can also spray inside the toilet bowl, on bath mats, or on the shower curtains to freshen up.

Why Make Air Freshener?

So now you see how simple it is to make your own air freshener, but why mess with it?

Unfortunately, conventional air fresheners bought from the store are loaded with harsh ingredients that can affect indoor air quality

Air fresheners, candles, plug-ins, etc., use artificial fragrances and other ingredients that can disrupt endocrine, reproductive organs, irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system.

These sprays can be harmful if breathed in or if they get in the eyes.

Making your own takes away that risk; it is super simple and is cost-effective. Plus, you can customize it for any scent that you want!

So give this homemade bathroom air freshener a try, and let me know what you think in the comments below.

What does withch hazel do? What if we skip it?

    1. Laura says:

The witch hazel will help the oils mix with the water a little better and can help the scent to last longer.
You can totally leave it out and just top the bottle off with water.

I would like to know an alternative for witch Hazel too in you bathroom air freshener as I have none.

You can use distilled water with a little alcohol.

I always use cheap vodka to make my room sprays….it has absolutely no scent and it blends the oils perfectly. It also evaporates quickly, whereas water does not and can leave the surface you sprayed wet for awhile. Plain witch hazel doesn’t have a very pleasant scent, IMO. (Thayers witch hazel brand has some types that are pre-scented, such as rose or coconut. They actually smell pretty good, but might clash with whatever essential oils you’re using! ) You can get a large bottle of cheap vodka from the liquor store for around $6. That will make a lot of room sprays! Witch hazel is quite a bit more expensive.

Hi Laura. I love your content and want to get back into living with essential oils and Iโ€™m eager to make your diys.
I recently stopped my membership with Young Living. Iโ€™d like to become a member of your oil company. Can you enroll me. Also does the company have something comparable to Thieves cleaner?

  7. ALAN R says:

This bath spray contains water, it should include a broad spectrum preservative, correct?

    1. Laura says:

You can add an antioxidant like vitamin E antioxidant or rosemary antioxidant to help extend the shelf life of the product if desired.
