How to use your homemade room spray

Air fresheners and room sprays can be used the same way. Spray upwards on walls or above furniture.

You can also use it as a DIY linen spray, so spritz it on fabrics like carpets, clothing, and curtains and on textiles like your couch or chairs.

Just be sure to patch-test a nonvisible area first to ensure color fastness. And never overspray – you donโ€™t want to make the area damp. A light mist is enough.

And donโ€™t forget to spritz a couple of times in the air for maximum freshness!

Benefits of Different Scents

Every essential oil has its own benefits and properties. Here are just a few examples for you:

  • Lavender: Known for its calming, relaxing properties, lavender is an excellent choice for an aroma spray to use in the bedroom at night, promoting restful sleep.
  • Peppermint: Refreshing and invigorating, peppermint is a perfect scent for a room spray that helps improve focus and concentration.
  • Eucalyptus: With a fresh, uplifting scent, eucalyptus is popular for room sprays that promote clear breathing. It’s also great for freshening up areas such as the bathroom
  • Lemon: Great for making citrus room sprays. Bright and zesty lemon essential oil is an excellent choice for boosting mood and energy levels.

Room spray tips

Making the base

I always say to use distilled water for the spray base. Distilled water is water thatโ€™s been purified and stripped of any impurities or minerals that could potentially clog the spray bottle or affect the scent of your room spray.

Do not be tempted to use tap water!! Youโ€™ll find distilled water at your local grocery store or online.

The Role of Alcohol

Adding a small amount of alcohol to your spray base helps preserve the scent and extend the shelf life of your room spray.

I recommend using high-proof vodka (unflavored), which is readily available at most grocery stores.

Environmental benefits

Making your DIY room spray or even a simple homemade Febreze is a great option for living a greener, eco-friendly life.ย

After all, the spray bottle can be used again and again, as can the ingredients from the same purchase (a bottle of distilled water should make several bottles of room spray, as an example)

Storage

I recommend storing your room spray in a dark, cool place such as a cabinet or closet. Exposure to light and heat will likely cause the scent to degrade quickly over time.

Itโ€™s also essential to use glass bottles or heavy-duty plastic to store your room spray.

Make sure to label your bottles with the date and scents used to avoid confusion, too (I say from experience!)

Safety

As with any DIY natural product, itโ€™s always best to patch test prior to use. In this instance, do the test on whatever material you plan to spray it onto.

Also, be sure to avoid contact with your skin and eyes as this is not a body spray – itโ€™s designed wholeheartedly as a room spray/air freshener.

Gift options

Why not make up several bottles of DIY room spray to offer as gifts to your loved ones?

Perhaps add a pretty bow to the bottle or a designer-style label. They look super stylish on a kitchen worktop or dressing table.

Summary

These homemade room sprays are so easy and affordable to make, and of course, you can customize the scent intensity by adding more or less essential oils to each blend as you prefer.

I do hope you love making your own DIY room spray!

Hi! Iโ€™m curious if there is an alternative to the vodka? We do not purchase any form of drinkable alcohol as a conviction. Would witch hazel be an alternative? Thankful I found your blog and YouTube channel! Iโ€™m enjoying learning about diy natural items ๐Ÿ˜€
