Want a fun and simple DIY for fall crafting or holiday gifting? Look no further than these homemade wax air fresheners!
These lovely air fresheners are easy to make and require just a few ingredients. You’ll have a blast getting creative, and they’ll make your home smell lovely!
My daughter and I love to get crafty as the weather cools down (like with my 16 fall craft ideas), and DIYs that are beautiful and simple are the name of the game.
These wax air fresheners are a repeat DIY for us because they are just so fun to make!
Wax air fresheners can be hung on the car mirror, placed in a dresser drawer, or kept in the bottom of the trash can. Anywhere you want the lovely natural aroma of essential oils, you can use them!
You’ll love this simple fall and winter craft. You can get creative with these and decorate them with dried fruit, spices, or dried flowers. Or you can leave them plain.
Either way, they will freshen up any space that you put them in, and they can make a lovely homemade gift.
I love a fresh-smelling car and house, but synthetic fragrances give me an instant headache. This is why I have switched to using homemade scented soy candles, homemade gel air fresheners, and homemade room sprays in my home.
I love that I can customize the scent and that I am receiving aromatherapy benefits all at the same time.
Why You’ll Love This DIY
- Easy craft: You don’t need any special skills or hours of time to make this fun DIY! This craft is fun and easy, perfect for a laid-back girls’ night or an activity for older kids.
- Natural ingredients: These wax air fresheners are made with only simple, natural ingredients. They are eco-friendly and sustainable!
- Homemade gift: I love homemade gifts around the holidays. These wax air fresheners make a sweet hostess gift or stocking stuffer, and you can customize them for your recipients’ preferences.
- Get creative: You don’t have to follow this recipe to a T — you can get so creative with the additions, scents, and shapes! These really are a blast to make.
Ingredients + Supplies
- Wax: I find it best to use a combination of soy and beeswax when making homemade wax sachets. Soy wax is too soft on its own, while beeswax has a natural scent that can overpower your essential oils, so a 2:1 ratio of soy wax and beeswax is the ideal mixture.
- Essential oils: You’ll need about a tablespoon of essential oils to give your air freshener a good scent. You can make your own blend or use one of my suggestions found below.
- Decorations: If you want to decorate them, you can do that by adding dried flowers, dried fruit, spices, glitter, or natural dyes. The possibilities are endless! I share more ideas later in this post.
- Molds: I use silicone molds because the air fresheners are really easy to pop out and don’t stick at all. I have heart-shaped molds and small circle molds, but you can use any shape here!
How to Make Wax Air Fresheners
Step 1: Place the soy wax and beeswax in a double boiler. Melt wax over medium heat.
Step 2: Remove from the heat and allow the wax to cool slightly. Add in essential oils. Stir until the oils are mixed well with the wax.
Step 3: Pour the wax mixture into silicone molds.
Step 4: If using, add in dried fruit, flowers, and spices.
Step 5: Stick a toothpick or bamboo skewer through the wax about 1/4″ from the top to add a hole for hanging.
Step 6: Allow the wax to completely harden and then pop the air fresheners out of the molds.
Tips
- These wax air fresheners are an excellent way to reuse old candle wax or the very bottom of candles that are left over once the wick is burned up. Especially if you made your own homemade beeswax candles!
- If you don’t prefer the yellow color for your air fresheners, you can use white beeswax instead.
- Don’t add your dried florals or other decorations to the air freshener right away; you want to wait a few minutes for the wax to begin hardening so they don’t sink to the bottom.
- If you make these without any dried flowers, spices, etc., you can melt them down and add fresh essential oils as they start to lose their scent. No need to buy new wax every time!
Essential Oils for Wax Air Fresheners
I love using essential oils to scent my home because they are all-natural and have a lot of aromatherapy benefits.
When it comes to adding essential oils to your homemade wax fresheners, you can pick any combination of oils you want. Some of my favorite oils to use are floral, citrus, and mint.
For this recipe, you will need about 1 tablespoon of essential oil. I know that sounds like a lot, but these will last for a very long time. Depending on your preference, you may want to add more or fewer drops of essential oils. Always start with less and add more if needed.

Decorating Your Wax Air Fresheners
To prevent the decorations from sinking to the bottom of the wax, allow the wax to harden slightly before adding anything in. Beeswax hardens pretty quickly, so you won’t need to wait long.
Dried flowers
Adding dried flowers or pressed flowers is a beautiful way to decorate your wax fresheners. This is especially fun when you are making a floral scent air freshener. I used dried rose petals, lavender buds, and jasmine.
Dried fruit
Dried orange slices, apples, and cranberries can be a beautiful way to add color and texture to your wax sachets. Adding dried fruit can be a great addition to a Christmas or fall-themed air freshener.
Spices
I love the smell of cinnamon during Christmas and fall. Adding a sprinkle of it on top looks really pretty, too. I even added cinnamon to my homemade Christmas soaps! Other spices you can try are star anise, cardamom, rosemary, or cloves.
More ideas
You can add a string or hemp cord to your air freshener so you can hang it up. Place it in a bag and add a ribbon to make it into the perfect gift. Get creative and add in natural coloring or glitter; this is especially fun if you are making this for a child.
FAQs
Wax air fresheners will give off the scent for several months. If you don’t add any decorative add-ins, you can remelt the wax and add more essential oils when the scent starts to fade.
Wax air fresheners can be hung or placed around the house to add a lovely, natural scent and a decorative touch. We like to place them in small bowls, hang them on cabinet knobs or hooks, and put them in closets to freshen up your clothes (learn more about how to keep a fresh-smelling closet).
My husband also hangs these up in our cars after he cleans them with my homemade car seat cleaner. It’s the perfect finishing touch for a fresh and clean ride!
You can, but the air fresheners won’t turn out as well. If you use all soy wax, the air fresheners will be quite soft and not nearly as durable. If you use only beeswax, they will have a strong honey-like scent from the beeswax that may overpower your essential oils. That said, if you are okay with that, feel free to use just one type of wax.
Yes, you can! I recommend using white beeswax, so you have a neutral base for your color. Use a natural coloring such as ethically-sourced mica powder to give your wax air fresheners a fun hue.

I have made these following your recipe. They look and smell great. Unfortunately, some have melted, fallen and/or broken apart in our cars. We live in upstate NY and it’s not even that hot outside (it’s rarely above 60 at this time of year). Have you had this issue? Is there a different wax to use with a higher melting point? Thanks for your help.
I’m sorry, I have not had this issue. You could try to recreate with a different brand of wax to see if this was just a fluke.
Hi, i’m just wondering if these will melt while hanging in the car? I know if it’s 100% soy wax it will melt. I’m in Australia so it does get hot here.
what is the soy wax alternative
just wondering wht the actual % of essential oils to wax you use (without me actually going & weighing 1 cup soy & 1/2 cup beeswax) thanks
