Anti-aging face cream helps reduce signs of aging, wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. With only 4-ingredients, this homemade face cream is a painless, straightforward recipe to whip up. And it’s budget-friendly.
Making your own DIY anti-aging face cream is one of the most effective ways to give your skin that youthful glow. We will be using all-natural ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils for this easy face cream recipe.
As I approached age 30, I decided it was time to make my way to the “anti-aging” section. I quickly found a ton of options for expensive creams full of ingredients I didn’t want to put on my skin. So I decided to take matters into my own hands.
After experimenting with a few different creams, lotions, and salves, I came up with a recipe I love. After a few weeks of using my homemade face cream, my skin felt softer and rejuvenated.

BEST INGREDIENTS FOR ANTI-AGING CREAM
Some of the best ingredients for aging skin can be found right in your pantry. Yup, you read that right! Vegetable-based oils like avocado oil and coconut oil both have amazing benefits for your skin, especially when it comes to wrinkles.
We will be using avocado oil, coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E oil, and essential oils for this recipe. Each of these ingredients plays a vital role in giving your skin a more youthful glow.
AVOCADO OIL
Avocado oil is a known superfood in the health food world, but have you ever thought of slathering it on your skin? This healthy oil is loaded with antioxidants, beta carotene, vitamin E and has anti-inflammatory properties.
When used on the skin, it will provide hydration, reduce itchiness, help promote elasticity, heal dry, chapped skin, and remove dead skin.
Research shows that avocado oil is a safe oil to use on the face. It is always important to do a small test patch before using anything new on your skin. I suggest doing this on the foot or hand.
COCONUT OIL
Similar to avocado oil, coconut oil is a well-known oil used in the kitchen. Coconut oil has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antimicrobial properties, making it great for cleansing the skin.
When coconut oil is absorbed into your skin, it helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by helping to keep your connective tissues strong and flexible.
I love adding coconut oil to homemade whipped body butter and sugar scrubs to get the amazing benefits on my skin.
BEESWAX
The beeswax in the recipe will give the face cream the perfect texture and it has many benefits for aging skin. If you want to make this recipe vegan, you can use soy wax instead or omit it entirely. Taking the beeswax out will change the texture of the face cream.
Beeswax has anti-inflammatory properties, is high in vitamin A, and can work as a natural exfoliator. Using beeswax on the face will provide hydration, reduce signs of aging, and help clear skin blemishes.
SHEA BUTTER
Shea butter is one of my favorite ingredients to use on my skin. It provides hydration; repairs damaged skin, can improve skin tone, and reduce wrinkles. It is the perfect ingredient to make homemade lotion and face moisturizers with.
Shea butter is a very gentle ingredient and can be used on sensitive skin. You can replace the shea butter in this recipe with mango butter or cocoa butter.
VITAMIN E OIL
We all know that vitamin E has amazing benefits for the skin, so of course, I am adding this into the recipe. Vitamin E can help regenerate the cells, improve skin tones, and reduce inflammation.
Vitamin E oil is one ingredient I really recommend adding to any homemade face moisturizer for aging skin. By just adding a few drops into the face cream, you get all the added benefits that go along with it. Just using plain vitamin E oil daily can help reduce signs of aging.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Several essential oils can be used to reduce signs of aging, fight wrinkles, fine lines, and improve uneven skin tones. Essential oils are very concentrated and it is important to dilute them properly before applying them to the face.
The best essential oils for anti-aging are lavender and frankincense. Both of these essential oils are gentle and great for sensitive skin!
Frankincense can reduce the appearance of age spots, skin discoloration, and sunspots. It also has the ability to tighten the skin and rejuvenate skin cells.
Lavender is an amazing oil for the skin and can be used to reduce the appearance of most skin conditions. It is a very soothing oil and can promote healthy, smooth skin.

Massage a small amount of the face cream onto your face after washing and using a face toner. For best results, use the face cream daily. I find it best to use it in the evening and allow it to absorb into my skin all night.
Some readers may find it beneficial to use this face cream along with a skin-tightening face serum. The serum can be applied before or after the face cream. You can also use this recipe in place of a facial oil.

Hi. I made this and mine is still quite liquid. It’s quite thick but still more of a liquid. Nothing like the picture you posted. The coconut oil was solid at room temperature. Any suggestions please to thicken it up. More arrowroot maybe??Thanks. Penny
Laura says
Hmm, I’m not certain what would have caused this if you are using solid coconut oil (not fractionated). These ingredients should really firm up once reaching room temp. Others have made some substitution suggestions in the comments, so you could look at those.
Kathy says
Just made this lotion. It feels a bit gritty after I incorporate the baking powder. What did I do wrong?
Laura says
It should be arrowroot powder, but you could always leave it out. It’s an optional ingredient.
Michelle says
What does the arrowroot powder do?
Janis says
Just made this face cream and I am so excited to try it. Could not believe how easy it is to make. I just love how you explain everything from the why’s to the wherefores of what you do and the products you use. Keep it up. You have made me a huge fan. Thank You
Laura says
That’s awesome, thank you so much!
Leslie says
I’d like to try this, but my skin is allergic to coconut oil. Is there something else I can substitute, or is it okay to leave it out?
Katelyn M says
Another reader suggested using tallow in place of the coconut oil.
Lisa says
I just made this and it came out hard like a lip balm. Is it better to use solid coconut oil or liquid?
Tina Lear says
I followed the instructions very carefully. But it’s still liquidy, and it looks like the arrowroot has sunk to the bottom. I stirred it several times once the preparation was cool enough to add the arrowroot, vitamin E and essential oils to. Maybe 10-12 times over the space of an hour.
What went wrong? And how can I fix it?
Laura says
Hm, were you able to use regular coconut oil, not fractionated coconut oil?
Most of these ingredients are a solid at room temperature, so it really should harden up once its cooled.

Hello from Greece!
Could you please give the ingredients in grams or oz? I’m new at making homemade skin care products and it would be very helpful to have the exact quantities.
Thank you!
Laura says
Thanks for reaching out. I now have weight measurements listed in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Mara says
Excellent, thanks a million!
Laura says
You’re welcome!
Leslie Wrobel says
I just made this using olive oil because I didn’t have avocado oil, and I used mango butter instead of shea butter (which I don’t like) and it turned out beautifully. Very nice texture and not greasy. 🙂
Laura says
I am so glad you love it!
makingcream says
can i use lanolin or will it be greasy?
Sofia says
Hello do you have this recipe by grams ?
Lisa says
Over $250 dollars to make with the ingredients provided. That’s quite pricey. Not worth it
Laura says
Good news, is that you can use those same ingredients to make this recipe over and over again. 🙂

I just found your site and I’m sooo appreciative of these recipe ideas. I have a soy skin and dietary intolerance and soy masquerades under MANY a name, like Vitamin E and glycerin. Plus, soy mimics estrogen just like tea tree, lavender and jasmine essential oils do, which contributes to breast growth in boys and men (yep, go on Google Scholar read the frightening studies), cancer and uterine fibroids which are currently ruling my abdomen. So I love that I can DIY recipes to my own liking to avoid these estrogen mimicking ingredients and you give great inspiration! Thanks so very much!

Made this twice now! I was looking for a recipe like this because the face cream I was buying was $60 and it was a very small jar. The ingredients in this match up pretty close. Thanks for an awesome and easy to follow recipe Laura!
My husband and I also really enjoy your shampoo recipes! We both use Castile soap and change up our essential oil fragrances for hair and body wash. Saves us a lot of money on hygiene products 😁. The ones that don’t have scary ingredients are so expensive so it’s great to be able to make it at home!

I am so glad!! Thanks for sharing!

This is my second time making. This time I substituted tallow for the coconut oil, because I didn’t have on hand. The consistency came out similar to using coconut oil.
