Learn how to make a DIY hair styling cream using natural ingredients to promote strong, healthy hair. This cream is perfect for taming unruly, wavy or frizzy hair.
Making your own natural hair styling cream can help reduce toxins entering your body, protect your hair against environmental damage, and promote hair growth.
This DIY hair cream works great for taming unruly hair and keeping flyaways and frizz under control. It is super easy to make and at a low cost.
Before I started making my own hair care products, I did my best to buy natural products in the store. Unfortunately, these products usually were not that healthy and would come with a hefty price tag.
Homemade Natural Hair Products
Getting started making your own products can seem overwhelming at first, but once you get started, you will find that most of the recipes can be made in under 30 minutes.
And best of all, it takes just a few key ingredients to begin making your own DIY hair spray, DIY dry shampoo, and even Homemade hair masks.
You don’t need any special equipment to make your own hair care products and will find that it costs very little to do so!
The benefit of making your own is that you can customize each product exactly how you want, making it the best fit for your particular hair type.
It also ensures that you know exactly what you are putting into your hair and scalp, making it easy to cut down on unwanted toxins entering the body.

Natural Hair Styling Cream Ingredients
Shea Butter
Shea butter has amazing benefits for the hair and scalp, which is why it is the first ingredient in this styling cream and my homemade shea butter lotion.
Not only is it very moisturizing, but it is also a good source of fatty acids along with vitamins A and E.
In addition, when used in the hair, shea butter can promote shine, reduce frizz, and protect against heat damage.
Shea butter is the perfect consistency for stying hair and will help tame almost any hair type. It has a beautiful nutty aroma that will leave your hair soft and smooth.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is commonly found in hair care products and is known for its nourishing properties. For this recipe, be sure to use regular coconut oil, not fractionated coconut oil.
Fractionated coconut oil stays liquid, and regular coconut oil is solid. The solid coconut oil will give this styling cream the correct texture.
Coconut oil can help with dry, flaky scalp, itchiness, and split ends. It will add moisture to dry damaged hair and help reduce hair breakage.
Argan Oil
Argan oil has amazing benefits for the hair and is one of the best carrier oils to use for styling unruly hair.
It has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties making it the perfect ingredient for protecting your hair and scalp.
Argan oil is commonly found in natural skin care and hair care products because of its nourishing properties. It is a good source of fatty acids and vitamins A and E.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is a light carrier oil rich in vitamins and minerals that are great for the hair. It can be used to strengthen and lengthen the hair naturally as an alternative to a homemade hair growth spray.
This is a great carrier oil to add to your styling cream to help thicken hair and reduce hair loss.
Aloe Vera Gel
The Aloe vera gel will help give this hair cream a similar texture as store-bought hair cream. However, be sure to use Aloe vera gel and not the liquid.
Though the liquid has some amazing benefits, it will make the styling cream too watery and won’t work.
Adding aloe to the hair cream can restore damaged hair and eliminate a dry, flaky scalp. Aloe vera is often found in conventional shampoos and conditioners.
Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E oil gets added to many homemade products because it is a natural preservative. It also has some great benefits for the hair and skin. Vitamin E oil can lengthen, strengthen, and moisturize dry, damaged hair.
Essential Oils
Adding essential oils to your styling cream will add a nice aroma along with many benefits for your hair. Lavender and rosemary essential oils are some of the best for the hair.
Lavender and rosemary essential oil can promote healthy hair growth as well as strengthen and thicken the hair.
If you prefer, you can choose different essential oils to add to your hair styling cream or omit them from the recipe.
Other essential oils that are good for hair:
- Peppermint
- Cedarwood
- Sandalwood
- Tea tree
How to Tame Wavy Hair
This DIY styling cream can be used on all hair types, including wavy and curly hair. However, it is best to use this hair cream on clean hair that is slightly damp or dry.
Rub about a dime-sized amount of cream between the palms of your hands and work into the hair to help hold the style.
This provides a rather light hold to the hair. For a stronger hold, consider using a homemade hair pomade or a homemade hair gel.
How to Add Natural Shine to the Hair
You can make a natural hair mask with coconut milk, olive oil, and essential oils to add shine to dull hair. Applying a hair mask can help promote healthy hair growth and add moisture.
Doing a DIY deep conditioner treatment can also be helpful for adding shine to dull hair.
The best homemade deep conditioner treatments are made with coconut oil, a carrier oil, essential oils, egg yokes, and mayonnaise.
These conditioner treatments can protect against split ends, restore damaged hair, and add moisture to dry hair.
Lastly, doing an apple cider vinegar rinse after washing hair can promote shine and reduce tangles. It is best to wash your hair with all-natural shampoo and then rinse with ACV.
Allow the mixture to sit in your hair for about a minute and then rinse out with warm water.

Hi Laura,
Recently stumbled upon your website and I love it! Already made the shampoo and shower gel recipes and love them! Now I’d like to try this recipe for taming my frizzy wavy/curly hair but have a question: do you know whether fresh aloe vera gel would also work? I live in the Netherlands and I cannot buy your recommended brand here 🙂 Thank you so much!
