DIY ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER ORNAMENTS
OK, I am not kidding when I say these are simple! This will probably be the easiest DIY you have ever done, and if you are anything like me, you are thrilled about that. This is a Christmas craft you can even do with the kids.
For this recipe, we are using airdry clay. Clay is the perfect material to use because essential oils will absorb into it easily.
You will also need Christmas cookie cutters, bamboo skewers, and essential oils.
HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS AROMATICALLY?
There are several ways to use essential oils. You can apply them topically, use them aromatically, and some essential oils you can even take internally. The most common way to use essential oils is with a diffuser.
However, you can “diffuse” essential oils without having an essential oil diffuser. Making these ornaments is just another way to get aromatherapy benefits in your home.
After the diffuser ornaments are done, you can drop essential oils on them and hang them on your tree. As the oils release into the air, you will have a lovely scent and receive aromatherapy benefits.
WHAT WILL I NEED TO MAKE ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER ORNAMENTS?
HOW TO MAKE AN ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER ORNAMENT
- Start by taking a hunk of airdry clay and shaping it into a “patty.” You will want to make it large enough for the cookie cutter you are planning to use and make it about 1/4 of an inch in thickness.
- Press the cookie cutter into the clay and remove excess clay around the cookie cutter. This part will be easier if you don’t press the clay hard against the table.
- Next, using the bamboo skewers, you will need to make a hole near the top of the ornament to thread the string through to hang the ornament. Be sure to give a little space from the top so the weight of the ornament doesn’t break the hole.
- Set the shape on a plate to dry. This can take 12-48 hours, depending on the size of the ornament.
- When it is completely dry, you can paint the ornament or leave it plain. My kids love to paint them, but personally, I love the plain look best on the tree.
- You can use string, hemp, or ribbon to thread through the hole to hang your ornaments.
- Add 12-15 drops of essential oils to the ornament and let it absorb into the clay. Hang your ornament on the tree.

HOW MANY DROPS OF ESSENTIAL OILS SHOULD I PUT ON A DIFFUSER ORNAMENT?
Add 12-15 drops of essential oil to the diffuser ornament. Apply the essential oils while the ornament is laying flat. Rub it in slightly or let it stay laying flat until the oils are absorbed into the clay before hanging it on the tree.
The amount of drops you add is really up to your preference. We have a large living space, so I like to add more oils to make the scent stronger in such a large space.
HOW LONG WILL DIFFUSER ORNAMENTS LAST?
Airdry clay essential oil diffuser ornaments are delicate, but if cared for properly, they will last a long time. After the Christmas season, I wrap them in tissue paper and put them in a ziplock bag. I put them on top of the other ornaments inside of my Christmas decor Tupperware.
Make sure that they don’t get smashed and that they are stored in a cool, dry place.
ADDING DECORATIONS TO YOUR DIFFUSER ORNAMENTS
Like I said before, I love the white clay look of the ornaments, but my kids think differently about this. You can easily add glitter, paint, and even stamps to make these ornaments even more customized.
After they are dry, add a line of glue around the outside of the ornament and sprinkle it with glitter. You can use stamps to add more designs or even write Merry Christmas on them.
Personalize them even further by adding a name, monogram, or date.

Hi Laura, thanks for sharing all your great ideas & creations. Those blends sound so fitting fir the holidays! I’m new to using EO’s so your site is a wonderful source of help and inspiration. One question about adding the oils to the ornament, now long does the scent last? A couple hours, a day? Just wondering how often you would reapply the oils. Thank you so much.
Laura says
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I reapply every other day or so. You can add more as needed!
