As the snow falls outside, we are inside listening to Christmas music and making essential oil diffuser ornaments. It may only be mid-November, but something about that first snowfall just gets you in the Christmas mood.

These diffuser ornaments were so easy to make that the kids could do it by themselves. Essential oil diffuser ornaments are so fun! They look beautiful on the tree, and they give off aromatherapy benefits at the same time.

I will show you the easiest way to make diffuser ornaments and share a few essential oil blends that will leave your house smelling just like Christmas!

Why You’ll Love This DIY

  • Easy DIY: Like I said, this craft was so easy that the kids did it by themselves! I love an easy DIY that’s also fun. You only need a few supplies for these ornaments and they can be as simple or complex as you like.
  • Aromatherapy: Using essential oils aromatically is a fantastic way to improve your well-being. Aromatherapy can help with anxious feelings, low energy, unpleasant moods, and more. Give the whole house a boost of aromatherapy with these ornaments.
  • Homemade gift: I’m always looking for cute homemade gifts for the holidays, and these ornaments are perfect! I like gifting them as a stocking stuffer, tying them onto packages, or gifting them with an assortment of my favorite essential oils.
  • Get creative: These ornaments are so forgiving, you can really get creative with them. Add beads, glitter, or paint; the sky is the limit!

What You’ll Need

  • Airdry clay: Clay is the perfect material for diffuser ornaments because the oils absorb into it well.
  • Bamboo skewers: You’ll need skewers or another pointed object to poke holes for the string to thread through.
  • Cookie cutters: You can make your ornaments any shape you like. I used my Christmas cookie cutters to make Christmas shapes like stars and snowflakes.
  • String: You can use any string, ribbon, or twine that you prefer. If you use a wide string, be sure to make your hole big enough to fit the string through.
  • Essential oils: You’ll need essential oils once your ornaments are done drying! Keep reading for some Christmas blend ideas.
  • Optional decorations: I like to keep my ornaments simple, but you can make them as elaborate or minimal as you prefer. You can add glitter, paint, stamps, beads, and more to make them unique.

How to Make Essential Oil Diffuser Ornaments

Standing at a counter pressing a ball of clay into a patty.

Step 1. Start by taking a hunk of airdry clay and shaping it into a “patty.” You will want to make it large enough for the cookie cutter you are planning to use and make it about 1/4 of an inch in thickness.

Using a cookie cutter to cut a star shape out of a clay patty.

Step 2. Press the cookie cutter into the clay and remove excess clay around the cookie cutter. Using the bamboo skewers, make a hole near the top of the ornament to thread the string through.

Step 3. Allow the shape to dry on a plate for 24-48 hours. When it’s completely dry, thread the string through the hole to hang your ornament.

Step 4. Add 12-15 drops of essential oils to the ornament and let it absorb into the clay. Hang your ornament on the tree and reapply oils as needed.

Tips for Success

  • When poking your hole, be sure to give it a little space from the top so the weight of the ornament doesn’t break the hole.
  • Apply the essential oils while the ornament is lying flat. Rub them in slightly or let it stay flat until the oils are absorbed into the clay before hanging it on the tree.
  • If you want to paint your ornaments, wait until they are completely dry then paint the clay before adding the string. You can also paint on glue and sprinkle glitter over it to make your ornaments sparkle.

Recipe FAQs

How many drops of essential oils should I put on a diffuser ornament?

The amount of drops you add is really up to your preference. We have a large living space, so I like to add more oils to make the scent stronger.ย I recommend 12-15 drops of essential oils in most cases.

How do I use essential oils aromatically?

There are so many fun ways to enjoy essential oils aromatically and receive the aromatherapy benefits. The most common way is an electric diffuser, but you can also make your own reed diffuser, use diffuser necklaces and diffuser bracelets, make DIY room spray, use roller bottles, or make these diffuser ornaments! Whenever the scent of essential oils is released into the air, you will get aromatherapy benefits.

What’s the best way to store diffuser ornaments?

Make sure that they don’t get smashed and that they are stored in a cool, dry place.ย Airdry clay essential oil diffuser ornaments are delicate, but if cared for properly, they will last a long time. After the Christmas season, I wrap them in tissue paper and put them in a ziplock bag. I put them on top of the other ornaments inside of my Christmas decor Tupperware.ย

Hi Laura, thanks for sharing all your great ideas & creations. Those blends sound so fitting fir the holidays! Iโ€™m new to using EOโ€™s so your site is a wonderful source of help and inspiration. One question about adding the oils to the ornament, now long does the scent last? A couple hours, a day? Just wondering how often you would reapply the oils. Thank you so much.
