Do you need to clean those toilet bowl stains? This simple 2 ingredient homemade foaming toilet bowl cleaner is just the thing to clean your toilet quickly and naturally.
If I had to guess, you probably don’t love cleaning your toilet. However, it is something that has to be done fairly regularly, especially if you live in a house of boys as I do.
I like to keep things easy and natural over here and cleaning my toilet is no exception. Most of the time, I use my toilet cleaning bombs and let them do the job by themselves, and other times my toilet needs a little more scrubbing.
When I need a little extra cleaning power, I use homemade foaming toilet cleaner. It is super easy and only requires 2-ingredients.
NON-TOXIC TOILET CLEANER RECIPE
When it comes to cleaning, I strive to keep all the toxic cleaners out. When I had my first baby, I decided that I wanted to replace all cleaners in my home with natural ones to make my house a healthier environment to live in.
Several years later, I am so glad I made the switch. I can truthfully say, I do not miss the conventional products one bit. Unfortunately, conventional cleaners have ingredients in them that can cause rashes, respiratory complications, harm the eyes, and compromise overall wellness.
Ingredients such as hydrochloric acid, bleach, and chlorine fill your household cleaners. Not only are they a risk for the ones cleaning but also for anyone else in the house after they have been used. The fumes of the cleaners will linger in the air and on the surfaces where they were used.
NATURAL TOILET CLEANER
Some of the best natural ingredients to clean with are vinegar and baking soda. Vinegar and baking soda are great cleaning agents, easy to find, and very cost-effective.
Vinegar is made with acetic acid making it a natural disinfectant (great for dishwasher detergent). The powerful acid in vinegar can break down and dissolve grime, dirt, mineral deposit, lime, rust, soap scum, hard water stains, and toilet bowl rings.
Baking soda has been used as a natural cleaner for many years. It has powerful cleaning properties and can be used to deodorize, loosen dirt, remove grime, and get rid of stains.
Lemon essential oil is another great natural cleaning agent. I love adding lemon to all of my cleaners as it has very powerful cleansing properties and has a fresh aroma. Lemon essential oil is a natural antibacterial and deodorizes.
FOAMING TOILET CLEANER
To make a foaming toilet cleaner, all you need is vinegar and baking soda. I know it seems too easy, but those really are the best ingredients to clean your toilet.
Depending on the severity of your toilet will determine how many times you will need to repeat these steps and how long you will need to let the ingredients set.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR TOILET NATURALLY
Step 1: Sprinkle your toilet with baking soda. I use about 1/2 a cup, but this doesn’t have to be exact.
Step 2: Fill a spray bottle with vinegar and lemon essential oil. The lemon essential oil is optional but will leave your toilet smelling fresh and clean. Use 10 drops of lemon essential oil to 1 cup of vinegar. If you don’t have lemon essential oil, you can use the juice from a lemon.
Step 3: Spray a generous amount of the vinegar and lemon essential oil mixture over the baking soda.
Step 4: Allow the mixture to foam up and sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
Step 5: Scrub the toilet with a scrub brush until clean.
Step 6: Flush toilet and re-spray with the vinegar and lemon essential oil mixture.
Step 7: Repeat steps as needed. If you have stubborn stains, allow the baking soda and vinegar mixture to sit longer before scrubbing your toilet.
NATURAL CLEANERS FOR TOILET
As mentioned above, simple ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar, and lemon essential oil are some of the best products to clean your toilet.
In fact, I use my vinegar to clean my washing machine and in my multi-purpose cleaning spray. (which accounts for 99% of my cleaning)
Other ingredients that can be used to clean are castile soap, borax, citric acid, and essential oils.
Lemon essential oil is my favorite oil to clean with, but any citrus essential oil will do. Citrus essential oils have cleansing and purifying properties that work great for natural cleaning.
Lavender, tea tree, and rosemary essential oil are also great oils to use for cleaning.
QUICK TOILET BOWL SCRUB
After you get your toilet clean, you can make a simple spray to keep the toilet fresh in between cleanings.
To make the spray, fill a glass (or stainless steel) spray bottle with filtered water, vinegar, castile soap, and lemon essential oil.
Use equal parts of water and vinegar in the spray bottle; I do 1/2 of a cup of each. Add 1 teaspoon of castile soap and 10 drops of lemon essential oil. Secure lid and shake well.
Spray into the toilet and scrub to clean. Or you can just spray into the toilet to freshen and purify. Be sure to shake well before each use.
WHAT CAN I USE TO REMOVE RUST RINGS IN MY TOILET?
If you have a rust ring on your toilet, you may need to add borax to the cleaner. Borax is similar to baking soda but on steroids.
Make a scrub with equal parts borax and vinegar. Pour them into the toilet and allow it to sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing clean with a toilet brush.
WHAT IS THE BEST CLEANER FOR TOILET SEATS?
For the seat of the toilet, you will want to use natural disinfectant ingredients. Lemon essential oil and vinegar are the best ingredients to use.
I’ll generally use a multi-purpose bathroom spray to disinfect the toilet seats, however, this solution will work well too.
Mix 1/2 of a cup of vinegar with 10 drops of lemon essential oil. Spray on the toilet seat and wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. Tea tree essential oil can be used too.

I can never understand the recommended combination of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda as despite the ‘it must be doing something good because it’s fizzing’ effect, chemically they *neutralise* each other – undermining each of their beneficial characteristics.
Far better to use them in sequence, not combined.

When I mix Castile soap & vinegar (for the quick toilet scrub) the mixture separates and gets clumpy. Why is this happening?? My Castile soap is eucalyptus tea tree. That wouldn’t make a difference would it?

Any suggestions about how to clean the bottom of a walk in fiberglass shower? The bottom is somewhat rough and seems almost impossible to get rid of embedded dirt. Thank you for any input.
