Thereโ€™s been a surge in eco-friendly cleaning products on the market recently. Some come as little bottled concentrates that you top off with water and shake to use.

Others arrive in beautiful, refillable aluminum bottles ready to be spritzed straight from the box.

And these cleaners are all awesome, let me say that. Theyโ€™re so good for your home, your health, and the environment!

But what if you canโ€™t afford an eco cleanerโ€™s price tag? They tend to come with a more enormous bill than conventional cleaners.

What if you want to clean the healthier way with 100% natural ingredients, but you canโ€™t afford to?

Well, at last, help is here.

Iโ€™m all for cost-saving and doing whatโ€™s best for my home and family. That’s why I love sharing my DIYs like this bathroom spray or my homemade window cleaner so you can do the same.

In this post, Iโ€™ll explain a homemade bathroom cleaner recipe which works just as well as leading chemical-laden cleaners but doesnโ€™t drench you in toxins.

Itโ€™s also way cheaper than some of the eco โ€˜trendyโ€™ cleaners out there, and you can make it as often as you want and still refill the same bottle.

Visit this postโ€™s โ€˜recipeโ€™ section to go straight there, or read on to discover some benefits of DIY bathroom cleaners.

What is homemade bathroom cleaner?

A homemade bathroom cleaner is a cleaning solution made from scratch using natural ingredients only.

Itโ€™s designed as an โ€˜all purposeโ€™ cleaner that can be used on most surfaces, such as the vanity, toilet bowl and tub.

This easy bathroom cleaner contains essential orange oil which, unlike the fresh fruit, does not contain citric acid, making it safe on marble and granite surfaces.

However, you’ll need to make sure they are pure without any adders or fillers. I’d check with the manufacturer just to be sure!

Otherwise, feel free to clean your entire bathroom with this fantastic homemade solution!

(But do a patch test first to be safe…)

Tips

  • Add liquid soap to clean your tub better! This is an optional step. What you could do, if you like, is squeeze a dollop of liquid soap into the tub and then spray the bathroom cleaner on top, and wipe it over together.

Remember to give your tub a good rinse afterward to remove any soapy residue, avoiding a slippery surface. For extra dirty tubs, consider using a DIY tub & shower scrub.

  • Consider using other citrus essential oils if you donโ€™t like orange oil. You could substitute this for lemon, clementine, or lime essential oil as some alternatives.
  • This is a multi-purpose cleaner, so you can use it on other parts of the home too. Think kitchen surfaces and kidsโ€™ bedrooms as some ideas!
  • And if you have mold spots that need attention, try using this mold remover method.

Or maybe youโ€™re a bit selective (like me, haha) and love to have different cleaners for different rooms?

If so, try making a DIY multi-purpose house cleaner!

  • Always use this homemade bathroom cleaner with a microfiber cloth. This means youโ€™ll get a streak-free finish and the best clean all around.

Microfiber is fantastic for removing grime from around faucets (particularly dust and dirt particles) and works great with this homemade bathroom cleaner.

Storage

This homemade bathroom cleaner will store nicely in the bottle for up to 6 months if you keep it out of sunlight and away from heat sources.

Remember to give this cleaner a good shake each time before every use.

This ensures the oils are well mixed with the alcohol, and you get a good, even consistency when it sprays from the nozzle.

I hope you enjoy making this homemade bathroom cleaner. I love this recipe as itโ€™s so easy to make and use.

Can you use this in the kitchen instead as an all purpose spray? I can’t stand the smell of vinegar.

      Yes, you could!

    Hi Laura

In South Africa we don’t seem to have rubbing alcohol. My searches all come up with hand sanitizer or Fibre Optics Cleaner. Do you have suggestions on what I can use if I can’t get 70% Rubbing Alcohol
    Many thanks

Just to clarify…your recipe calls for “8 oz (1/2 cup)”…8 oz is a full cup (liquid measures). Which do a use, 1/2 cup or 1 full cup (8oz.)? One cup of each would fill a 16oz bottle so I’m kind of guessing that’s what you meant but feel better checking with you first. I love your website and I love your recipes. I want to make this one as well but decided to check first.

    1. Laura says:

Thanks so much! It should be 1/2 cup, 4 ounces. I just updated the post!

    Hi

Hey Laura, love your AP spray recipe and can’t wait to try it. I already use your granite countertop cleaner and IT IS AMAZING! I’m a little confused because most of the ingredients for both cleaners are the same, but in this recipe, you say not to use citrus essential oils on natural stone, whereas the granite cleaner recipe says using citrus essential oils is safe. Just want to make sure I’m not damaging my granite counters-I use On Guard which does contain wild orange.

    1. Laura says:

Thanks for catching that for me! Pure orange essential oil does not contain citric aid, making it safe for granite.

Perfect! I assumed that was the case, but just wanted to make sure. BTW, I just have to tell you how much your love of sharing diy natural products has meant in my life. I have multiple auto-immune diseases and have been through so much over the last two decades health wise. Part of that has included having to stop using things people take for granted everyday-makeup, lotion, perfume, all synthetic cleaning products, and most soaps/deodorants/body care products. I started using Doterra and YL essential oils two years ago and did a massive overhaul on all things going into me, onto me, and around me. Organic everything! I stumbled across your site as I was researching how to make my own body butter, and your site changed my life in so many ways! I can use cleaning products I make without getting terrible rashes, I can once again use mouthwash, makeup, candles, bug dope…and the list goes on, because you’ve shown how to make these things naturally. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for improving my quality of life so much through your research and willingness to share with others all the wonderful things you have learned. You’re a blessing and I have prayed many times over you and your family that God would bless you in the same manner. Keep up the amazing work, you’re bettering lives!
