Christmas is the season of making your home extra cozy, and what better way than with the golden glow of a wax warmer filled with homemade Christmas wax melts?

I love candles at Christmastime — I use homemade taper candles and DIY pillar candles at the dinner table and scented soy candles to get the house smelling nice.

But when the kids are running around the house, or I’m too busy for careful supervision of the flames, out comes the wax warmer!

Popping a couple of these DIY Christmas wax melts into the warmer is the perfect way to make your home extra cozy.

They smell just like Christmas and get the whole family in the holiday spirit. We have the warmer going almost every single day!

I love using these wax melts, so of course I love gifting them, too. They make a great homemade stocking stuffer, and they’re easy to make in bulk as a homemade gift for teachers, neighbors, and coworkers!

Why You’ll Love Them

  • Natural fragrance: If avoiding artificial fragrance is important to you, but you still want your home to smell great, this is the recipe for you. These wax melts are scented with 100% all-natural essential oils.
  • Easy homemade gift: These wax melts take only 20 minutes to make, and they are a lovely homemade gift that anyone can get use out of!
  • Flame-free: These are such a great alternative to candles; you get all of that cozy Christmas scent without an open flame when you use an electric wax warmer.
  • Festive scents: Make your home smell like Christmas with 3 fun seasonal scent blends!

What You’ll Need

DIY Christmas wax melts ingredients and supplies.
  • Beeswax: I recommend pellets for easier melting, but you can also grate a bar of wax.
  • Essential oils: These will add a wonderful natural fragrance to the wax melts and offer aromatherapy benefits!
  • Coconut oil: Coconut oil helps soften the beeswax so it melts more quickly and evenly.
  • Silicone mold: You can find the round molds I used linked in the recipe card or choose some with fun shapes, as I used in my original homemade wax melts recipe!

Christmas Scent Blends for Wax Melts

We’ll add essential oils to these homemade Christmas wax melts for a lovely, festive scent without any artificial fragrance. Choose one of the blends below before you make your wax melts. You could also divide the recipe in half and make 2 different scents!

Christmas Tree

  • 20 drops Siberian fir essential oil
  • 20 drops cypress essential oil
  • 10 drops cedarwood essential oil

Candy Cane

  • 50 drops peppermint essential oil

Cinnamon Orange

  • 40 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 10 drops cinnamon essential oil

I do love the scents of Christmas. If you are having trouble deciding which blend to use, go with the Christmas tree blend. That is the same one I used for my Christmas candles, and you just can’t go wrong!

I also have lots of fun blends in my Christmas diffuser blends post if you want more inspiration!

How to Use Wax Melts

To use your homemade wax melts, simply place 1-3 wax melts in the top tray of your wax warmer. Turn on the warmer and allow the wax to melt and release the scent of the essential oils!

When you’re done, turn off the warmer and leave the wax in the tray. You can get several uses out of the wax melts before the scent starts to fade.

Once they are spent, wipe the warmer out and add fresh wax melts, or add a few drops of essential oils to the warm wax to extend the life a little longer.

Safety Notes

  • Hot wax can burn, so you’ll want to keep the warmer out of reach and let it cool completely before you move it.
  • If you have cats, I’d use your warmer in a room with good airflow that they’re free to leave, and only for shorter stretches instead of all day. If you have birds, I’d skip essential oil wax melts altogether, since their lungs are so sensitive.

Expert Tips

  • I let the wax cool to about 160°F before I add the essential oils. Essential oils are made of really delicate scent compounds, and the bright, light ones like orange and peppermint start to evaporate in hot wax, so adding them too early sends all that Christmas scent into your kitchen instead of into your melts! Just don’t let it drop much below 150°F, because beeswax starts to set right around 145°F and you’ll want it pourable.
  • The yield of this recipe will vary depending on your mold size. If you use the same molds that I used, you’ll get about 15 wax melts.
  • If you don’t have a double boiler, you can make one by setting a glass bowl on top of a pot of boiling water.
  • Don’t let any wax go down your sink, as it can clog drains. I recommend reheating the double boiler to melt the wax and wiping the melted wax off before washing dishes.

Christmas Wax Melts for Homemade Gifts

I am the biggest fan of homemade Christmas gifts ever, and these wax melts are one of my go-tos! They are easy to make and just about anyone can use and enjoy them.

When you’re gifting homemade wax melts, the packaging makes the gift! You can put them in cute boxes or bags, or fill a jar with the melts. Then, don’t forget the decorations! Add one of these festive touches to make the gift really special:

  • Add a cloth cover to the jar and tie it on with twine
  • Tie a red velvet ribbon around the jar, bag, or box
  • Attach a sprig of fresh rosemary or a cedar cutting to the container
  • Don’t forget the label! This lets them know what they’re receiving and how to use it.

If you are unsure if your recipient has a wax warmer to use with these melts, I like to add one to complete the gift!

Recipe FAQs

Are wax melts safe?

Because they don’t use an open flame like a candle, they are considered much safer than candles! That said, you are still dealing with hot wax, so caution is necessary, especially around children.

Can I substitute a different wax?

You can substitute soy wax if you’d like! Feel free to read more about the pros and cons of each in my post on beeswax vs. soy wax. I do not recommend coconut wax because it is too soft for this recipe.

Can I use a different essential oil blend?

Yes, you can try a blend from one of my other recipes, choose a winter diffuser blend, or make your own. Just be sure to scale it up so you are adding about 50 drops of essential oils to the recipe.
