Have you tried making your own DIY body scrub? Itโ€™s so fun, so simple, and works better than anything you can buy in-store.

Along with the change of season comes a change in skin care. Out goes the DIY sunscreen, and in comes fall body scrubs and moisturizer galore.

If, like me, youโ€™re partial to smooth skin going into winter, then youโ€™ll love todayโ€™s post.

Youโ€™ll find three fall body scrub recipes below for you to make in the comfort of your own home.

Using simple, all-natural ingredients – they are kind and gentle to the skin.

Making body scrubs is so much fun and has huge benefits, such as reduced waste, better results, and cost savings.

Reasons to Love These Body Scrubs

  • Bright skin: Exfoliating the dead skin cells reveals brighter, more luminous skin underneath. It’s so refreshing and leads to overall healthier skin. Exfoliating regularly can even provide some anti-aging benefits.
  • Moisturize: Body scrub softens and smooths the skin, leaving it feeling incredible. After I’m done using one of these fall body scrubs, I feel like a whole new person! The moisture is especially important as the weather gets cooler.
  • Seasonal: There’s something so fun about making seasonal recipes. Every year I make a big batch of fall body scrub, pumpkin spice soap, and a scented candle with one of my fall essential oil blends. It gets me in the spirit of the season and makes me so excited!
  • Eco-friendly: Making your own body scrubs is a fantastic way to cut down on waste! Skip the plastic containers and instead refill your own reusable jar. Plus, with these recipes, you can use up food that may otherwise go to waste, such as expired spices and leftover applesauce.

Key Ingredients

Each of these recipes has a base of three important ingredients that help with exfoliation and moisturizing. From there, we will add other ingredients for additional benefits and a nice fall scent!

  • Brown sugar: Brown sugar is a gentle yet effective exfoliant for body scrubs. The abrasive granules slough off the dead skin cells as you rub the body scrub into your skin.
  • Olive oil: The addition of olive oil gives these body scrubs a luxurious texture and moisturizing properties. If you have another liquid carrier oil that works well for your skin, feel free to use that.
  • Essential oils: Essential oils add a delightful smell and additional benefits for the skin! Feel free to substitute the essential oils, but you may not get the same fall scent.

Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub Recipe

Here is the first body scrub recipe – perfect for fall! The real pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice give this scrub a lovely texture and delightful scent.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 tbsp of pumpkin puree
  • 5 drops of cassia EO
  • 1/2 tbsp of olive oil

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in a small bowl.
  2. Stir in the wet ingredients.

Transfer to an airtight storage container. This particular scrub must be stored in the fridge and ought to be used within 3 days to keep it at its best.

A jar of gingerbread body scrub with dried oranges and cinnamon sticks.

Gingerbread Body Scrub Recipe

Doesnโ€™t this sound delicious? I love the smell of ginger in the fall and winter. If you’d like to keep a body scrub on hand at all times, this is the best recipe, as it has the longest shelf life of the three!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of nutmeg spice
  • 1/8 tsp of ground coriander
  • 5 drops of ginger essential oil
  • 1/8 cup of olive oil

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in a small bowl.
  2. Stir in the wet ingredients.

Transfer to an airtight storage container and store it in the fridge. Use it within 4 weeks.

Apple Spice Body Scrub Recipe

I love anything apple-related in the fall. The smell is just amazing and it reminds me of apple picking!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon spice
  • 1/2 tbsp of apple puree or applesauce
  • 5 drops of douglas fir EO
  • 1/2 tbsp of olive oil

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients in a small bowl.
  2. Stir in the wet ingredients.

Transfer to an airtight storage container and store in the fridge. Use within 3 days.

How to Use Body Scrub

The best way to use these scrubs is to apply them with your hands.

Take a generous amount and smooth it on your body, working in gentle, circular motions to exfoliate the skin.

You can leave it on your skin for a few minutes to allow the olive oil to add some moisture too. Rinse it off with warm water and pat dry.

Feel free to use a loofah with these body scrubs for additional exfoliation, or try a homemade loofah soap bar.

Only use these body scrubs on unbroken, undamaged skin – always avoid cuts and wounds. And certainly, donโ€™t use these scrubs on any sensitive areas.

Expert Tips & Safety

  • Take note of the shelf life of the recipe you choose to make. The gingerbread scrub lasts far longer than the pumpkin and apple scrubs. The perishable scrubs should also be stored in the refrigerator.
  • Always follow up exfoliating with a homemade moisturizer, such as DIY pumpable lotion or homemade whipped mango body butter.
  • Body scrub can be used on the arms, legs, back, and even face. Just listen to your body and avoid exfoliating if the skin is sensitive or tender. For my feet, I prefer a DIY salt foot scrub because it does a better job on rough skin.
  • Avoid using sugar scrubs on children, as the sugar granules can irritate their young, sensitive skin.
  • Do not use body scrubs on broken or damaged skin.

Recipe FAQs

What is body scrub?

Homemade body scrub is an exfoliator designed to remove dead, dry cells from the skin, revealing fresher, healthier skin underneath. They come in all sorts of sizes and packages and are usually made from a salt or granular sugar base, but sometimes youโ€™ll find them made with coffee grounds, such as my homemade coffee scrub. Body scrubs, like DIY sea salt scrub or these fall sugar scrubs, are designed to act as a gentle abrasive to the skin.ย

How often should you use a body scrub?

There’s no set number for how often you should use body scrub, but it’s best to start slowly and increase the frequency as needed. Exfoliating too often can lead to irritated, sore skin. I recommend starting with once a week and increasing as desired. Don’t forget to follow up with a homemade body cream or other moisturizer to soothe the skin afterward.

Thank you Laura for encouraging me that I can do this

Could you leave out the pumpkin purรฉe to make the Pumpkin Spice sugar scrub more shelf stable? Also, what other essential oils could you use instead of Cassia? Thanks in advance!

    1. Laura says:

Yes, you can leave it out but may need to add more oil to get the right consistncy. You can use cinnamon or wild orange. I love those fall scents too and will make a beautiful soap bar!
