In this post, you’ll find our own natural beard butter recipe, which smells incredible and does wonderful things for beards.
Think along the lines of well-styled beard hair, healthier skin underneath, a gorgeous scent, and a beard that stays put as you style it.
It really is an all-in-one product!
What is beard butter?
Beard butter is primarily used to hydrate facial hair and skin. It also can be used as a styling product for beards, providing a light hold.
It’s popular with men who want to maintain a great-looking beard, but what’s also nice with this recipe, especially, is it makes beards healthier and softer.
Beard butter is usually made from natural oils and butters such as shea butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil – all of which nourish facial hair and skin.
My DIY beard butter recipe below has been in the works for some time now to create the perfect consistency and provide the optimal amount of nutrients using only natural ingredients.
So what’s in this beard butter?
Surprisingly, not a lot of ingredients were needed to make this homemade beard butter.
- Shea butter: Deeply moisturizing and has a thicker consistency than some, making for better beard styling strength.
- Jojoba oil: A softening, nurturing oil that is great to use on skin and hair. Learn more about jojoba oil here.
- Black seed oil: This little-known oil with antibacterial and antimicrobial properties is renowned as a hair growth booster. You can read all about the benefits of black seed oil here.
- Cedarwood essential oil: In addition to a number of hair benefits, including helping with hair growth, the lovely earthy, woodsy vibe fragrance it puts off is a must in most of our beard products.

Step 3: Add cedarwood oil.
Step 4: Transfer to the fridge for 20 minutes (this is to speed up the cooling process.)

Step 6: Transfer to an airtight container for storage.
How to use beard butter
For ultimate beard butter perfection, the first thing to know is it works best on clean beards. So, wash your facial hair beforehand and dry your beard thoroughly.
Then, massage a small amount of beard butter in the palms of your hands and run it through your hair.
Note: If you’re wondering how much beard butter to use, there really is no set rule.
If you ask my husband, he’ll tell you little goes a long way, more than you’d expect, so start with less. You can always add more if needed.
Just use enough to cover the beard. Once this is done, use a comb or beard brush to style the beard as desired.

When to use beard butter vs oil?
Both beard oil and beard butter are used to hydrate the beard. Compared to beard oil, beard butter has a thicker consistency, so it’s easier to apply evenly and style the beard how you want.
It is important to use beard oil, too, in addition to beard butter. It won’t help with styling your beard necessarily. However, it will keep it hydrated.
Tips
- Use beard butter after beard oil! I don’t suggest replacing your beard oil routine with beard butter, but rather using beard butter in addition to your beard oil.
- Stir, stir, stir! Its essential to constantly stir the ingredients while they cool to ensure everything combines well.
- To prevent mold and bacteria from growing, be sure to keep the container free of any water. I store this beard butter in the closet in our bathroom.
- Less is more! If you find you’ve applied too much beard butter, simply rewash your beard and start over.
Substitutions
If you don’t have all the ingredients for this recipe, you can still make it with similar ingredients. The final result may have a slightly different texture, but it will still work.
If you don’t have jojoba oil, you can use fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil.
Instead of black seed oil, you can use any carrier oil. However, I would suggest sunflower or castor oil.
For the cedarwood, you can use any fragrance you prefer. You may need to adjust the amounts depending on your personal preferences!
Lastly, I do not recommend substituting the shea butter. I have not made it without shea butter as the base during the testing process, and as a result, I cannot verify how it would turn out. However, I have made a hair butter recipe using mango butter that works great!
Frequently asked questions
Do you put beard butter on a wet or dry beard?
Put beard butter on a dry, clean beard. If it’s a little damp still, that’s ok, but you’ll want it as dry as possible.
How does beard butter differ from beard balm?
The key difference is that beard balm has a thicker texture with a stronger hold overall. Usually, beard balms will be made with beeswax.
Beard butter is softer to apply and has a more nourishing effect on the beard with a lighter, more natural styling hold.
How long does beard butter last?
In terms of longevity, this beard butter lasts up to one year in its container. Be sure to store it out of direct sunlight.
What does beard butter do?
Beard butter is almost like a mix of beard oil and beard balm. It is deeply hydrating while providing a light to moderate hold.
Key takeaways
The reality is this. Having a well-groomed beard can be the difference between looking sharp or looking scruffy (as I subtly slide this post under my husband’s eyes, haha.)
This is why beard butter is so popular!
It offers an easy, quick, reliable solution to maintaining beard style and beard health in one fantastic product.
