Homemade melt and pour soap is the perfect holiday DIY! It’s simple and easy, and the results are stunning.
I love making a special seasonal soap bar for my Christmas gift baskets every year. Soap is such a fun gift that anyone can enjoy.
In the past, I’ve made one of my 5 Christmas Soap Recipes, but this year I wanted to try something new.
I decided to make a holiday spice soap using one of my favorite essential oil blends! This soap is spicy, sweet, and festive; it’ll surely get you in the Christmas mood.
I’m certain you’ll love it just as much as I do!
Why You’ll Love Them
Unique gift: I love making homemade Christmas gifts every year. They are thoughtful, resourceful, and everyone loves receiving them. These homemade soap bars are perfect for hostess gifts, stocking stuffers, and other holiday gifts.
Easy to make: Melt and pour soap has an amazingly easy process with wow-worthy results. It requires minimal equipment and no special skills. This recipe is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to keep it simple this year!
Customize them: You can really get creative with homemade melt and pour soap. Swap out the essential oils, try different color combinations, and experiment with your soap base for a truly one-of-a-kind soap bar.
Festive scent: The Holiday Joy essential oil blend has been a favorite of mine and is wonderful in soap! This essential oil is sweet, spicy, earthy, and warm – perfect for Christmastime.
What Goes Into This Recipe
- Melt and pour soap base: You can use any melt and pour soap base you’d like! I typically opt for a shea butter base or goat milk base.
- Essential oil: Holiday Joy essential oil gives this soap a Christmassy, sweet, spicy fragrance. It’s a crowd-pleasing scent that is perfect for the holiday season!
- Mica powder: Mica powder is a natural colorant that is perfect for dying cosmetics and skincare products. You’ll need two different colors to achieve the swirled look in these holiday spice soap bars. Be sure to use ethically sourced mica; I go into detail about this later on in this post.
Holiday Spice Soap Bar Recipe
Step 1. Chop the soap base into small pieces and melt in a double boiler or a glass bowl set atop a pot of water. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the essential oils.
Step 2. Split the melted base into two separate containers. Stir in the mica powders, making a different color in each container.
Step 3. Pour the melted soap base into the silicone molds, alternating between colors. Add a little bit of each color at a time to create different layers.
Step 4. Allow the soap bars to harden completely before removing them from the molds. Attach labels with a piece of twine.
Expert Tips
- Melt and pour soap base can take a long time to melt down. I recommend chopping it into very small pieces to speed up the process.
- Work quickly! The soap base will start to harden pretty fast, so it’s important to pour it into the molds as soon as possible.
- For best results, I recommend letting your soap cure overnight before using it.
- Store the soap bars in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to maximize their shelf life.
- Don’t forget to add the label to your soap if you are gifting it! You can get free printable labels in my member resource library.
- Feel free to get creative with how you package your handmade soap gifts. I like to use hemp twine or red and white twine with a printed tag. You can also put it into cute boxes or bags. The soap bars make a wonderful addition to a homemade Christmas gift basket!
Sourcing Ethical Mica Powder
Mica is a very effective natural colorant that is a popular choice for coloring cosmetics and skincare products. Unfortunately, a lot of mica powders are obtained through unethical practices, so it’s important to do your research before purchasing mica.
Be sure that whichever mica powder company you choose has clear information regarding their ethics. I get all of my mica powders from Mad Micas. Their ethics statement checks all of the boxes for me, so I feel comfortable purchasing their products. Whichever brand you use, take a little extra time to do some research to ensure you aren’t supporting unethical practices.
Recipe FAQs
I get all of my essential oils from doTERRA and the holiday joy is one of their seasonal blends.
If you don’t want to get a bottle of Holiday Joy essential oil, you can use a combination of orange, cassia, clove, cinnamon, cedarwood, nutmeg, and eucalyptus oils to get a similar scent. Alternatively, you can try a different blend altogether! I have lots of wonderful ideas in my Christmas essential oil blends post.
Nope! That’s one of the great things about melt and pour soap. You don’t need to plan weeks ahead for Christmas gifts; this soap is ready for use in less than a day.
I just love the smell of these soap bars I plan to give these and my homemade candy cane soap bars as gifts this Christmas. Let me know what you plan to use them for!
