Mexican is kind of my go-to meal, especially when I don’t have any plans for dinner. It is so easy to whip up and I love that it can be loaded with fresh greens, herbs, salsa, and avocados. It is so delicious and healthy.

If you are following a Whole30, paleo, or gluten-free diet, you’ve probably noticed how challenging it can be to find a taco seasoning that works with your dietary restrictions.

When I first started Whole30, I thought something as simple as taco seasoning would be easy to fit into my diet. Boy was I wrong!

Many premade taco seasonings have gluten, sugar, MSG, and other ingredients you may wish to avoid.

Fortunately, making your own sugar-free, gluten-free taco seasoning is very simple!

This gluten-free taco seasoning is delicious, easy to make, and has a well-balanced flavor. You won’t miss the premade packets one bit!

Why We Love It

Flavorful: Taco seasoning can add so much flavor to any dish and this recipe is delicious! Keep a big jar on hand for fajitas, taco salad, or Mexican stuffed sweet potatoes.

Diet and allergy-friendly: You can enjoy this taco seasoning without worrying about accommodating dietary restrictions or allergies. This recipe is gluten-free, sugar-free, paleo, and Whole30-approved.

Easy to make: It doesn’t get much easier than this recipe! All you have to do is combine the spices and transfer them to a storage jar.

What Goes Into It

All you need to make a healthy taco seasoning recipe is a blend of spices and an airtight jar. I like to store mine in a small mason jar in the pantry with my other spices. Or you can save an empty spice container and fill it with your homemade taco seasoning.

Taco seasoning ingredients on a white plate.
  • Chili powder
  • Cumin
  • Salt: I use pink Himalayan, but any salt will do. If you are sensitive to saltiness, it’s always a good idea to add it slowly to taste.
  • Black pepper
  • Onion powder
  • Cinnamon: Just a touch of cinnamon gives the seasoning a rich, well-balanced flavor.
  • Paprika: I just used regular paprika, but smoked paprika will also work.
  • Red hot pepper flakes: These make the taco seasoning extra spicy! Feel free to omit if you or your kids are sensitive to spice.

How to Make Homemade Taco Seasoning

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl.
  2. Stir it with a spoon until the spices are thoroughly blended.
  3. Transfer the mixture to an airtight jar such as a mason jar or an old spice jar.

Store your taco seasoning in a cool, dark place (such as a spice cabinet) for best results. Don’t forget to label the jar so you know what’s in it!

Helpful Tips

  • Please note that this taco seasoning recipe is a bit on the spicy side; for less heat, leave out the red hot pepper flakes.
  • This recipe will make about 1/4 cup. I usually double it so it will last me longer.
  • Making a large batch will save you so much time. This recipe will last up to 6 months when stored in an airtight container, so you will only need to make this twice a year! If you use taco seasoning often, you may want to double or triple the recipe.
  • I recommend adding the seasoning slowly the first time and tasting as you go. 2-3 tablespoons per pound of meat is a standard ratio, but it will depend on how flavorful you like your taco meat.
