Making your own slushie at home is a much healthier option and just as delicious! This watermelon slushie is made with fresh melon and key limes.

My kids love watermelon and most of the time, I just cut into it and give them a slice. Though that is delicious, I decided to dabble into slushie making. Oh my goodness, talk about tasty!

I am going to share a couple of different versions of this recipe so you can customize it just the way you want. Each way is simple and will only take a few ingredients to whip up.

BEST WATERMELON SLUSHIE

Watermelon is the perfect fruit for summertime; because of its high water content, it can help keep you hydrated. It also works well in slushies for the same reason. Since melons contain about 92% water, there is no need to add ice to this recipe.

The night before you make a healthy watermelon slushie, cut a watermelon into 1-inch chunks. Put them in a freezer-safe container or bag and place them in the freezer.

We will be using these in replace of ice, so we still get that slushy texture, but without watering down our drink.

To make a watermelon slushie with all real fruit, you will need a watermelon, key limes or fresh mint, honey or maple syrup, and water.

You will need a blender or food processor to blend the ingredients. My favorite blender is the ninja.

WATERMELON

As I mentioned above, we are going to be using frozen watermelon for this recipe. If you are in a pinch, you can make this with fresh melon and ice. I find the frozen watermelon chunks give me the texture I am looking for as well as a more intense flavor.

KEY LIMES OR MINT

Here is where you can customize your slushie! I have tried this both ways and even did a little combo of both; they are all delicious.

To get that fresh lime taste in your slushie, you can add the juice of 1-2 key limes, add a couple of tablespoons of lime juice, or 2-4 drops of lime essential oil.

Or you can go with a refreshing mint and watermelon flavor. Adding fresh mint leaves to the frozen melon slushie is so delicious and one of the best healthy summer drinks.

SWEETENER

Watermelon is already very sweet on their own, especially if you are buying them in season or better yet growing them in your backyard. You don’t have to add any extra sweetener to make this slushie taste delicious.

If you prefer it sweeter, you can add a couple of tablespoons of pure maple syrup or honey.

WATER

You will need a little water to blend up your slushie. I don’t add a lot because I like it to be thick and have that icy texture.

Plain water will do. However, we found using sparkling water gives it even more flavor. The extra carbonation really adds a punch. You can use plain sparkling water or even ones that are flavored with lime or lemon.

RECIPE NOTES:

Add more or less water, depending on the texture you prefer.

You can use a food processor or a blender to blend up your slushie ingredients.

It is best to set the frozen watermelon cubes out about 5 minutes before making the slushie to make measuring and blending easier.

If you don’t have frozen watermelon, you can use 5 cups of fresh melon with 1 cup of ice in the blender.

Feel free to substitute with any fresh or frozen fruit you have on hand!

I just love recipes that involve fresh fruit! From my easy strawberry jam recipe to my favorite smoothie recipes, there’s nothing quite like the burst of flavor and natural sweetness they bring.
