As a parent, I love using kid-friendly diffuser blends to add a calming and inviting atmosphere to our home. These gentle blends are perfect for creating a peaceful environment for the whole family.

Kids’ diffuser blends come in many different scents, so there’s something for everyone!
And depending on who you ask in our home, the diffuser is as important as the fragrance coming out of the machine!
With the wide variety of diffuser designs and lighting options, filling and diffusing oils will quickly become the highlight of your day.
Here are my favorite kids’ diffuser blends that are easy to make and smell great.
6 Essential oil diffuser blends for kids
Choose from one of the blends listed below, and add those oils to your diffuser.
1. Sleep tight
I like to call this my oil blend for sleep. This is the one I run at bedtime, and it’s soft and a little sweet, so the whole upstairs ends up smelling like clean laundry!
- 3 drops of lavender essential oil
- 2 drops of copaiba essential oil
- 1 drop of roman chamomile essential oil
2. Clear desk
After a long day of school, sometimes it can be hard to get children to sit down and focus on homework. This one is bright mint over a green, herby base, and it’s what I run when the kitchen table turns into a homework table.
- 3 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 2 drops of rosemary essential oil
- 1 drop of frankincense essential oil
3. Bright kitchen
Sweet orange with a little clove behind it, and my goodness does it make the house smell like the holidays are close! Diffuse this one during cooler months.
- 3 drops of wild orange essential oil
- 2 drops of frankincense essential oil
- 1 drop of clove essential oil
4. Gentle comfort
Warm ginger with a hint of licorice from the fennel, and the peppermint keeps the whole thing from getting too heavy.
Or use this blend and make them into DIY wax air freshener melts and hang them in the car in time for your next road trip.
- 3 drops of ginger essential oil
- 2 drops of fennel essential oil
- 1 drop of peppermint essential oil
5. Cheerful energizer
This one is all citrus with a little lavender underneath, and it’s what I put on first thing in the morning to get the day started off right.
- 2 drops of wild orange essential oil
- 2 drops of bergamot essential oil
- 1 drop of lavender essential oil
- 1 drop of lemon essential oil
6. Quiet corner
Wild orange and lavender pair well together, and this is the simplest blend on the list. Diffuse this blend before bed, church, or school. Plus, these two smell amazing together!
- 3 drops of wild orange essential oil
- 3 drops of lavender essential oil
How to use the diffuser
- Add water to the diffuser fill line.
- Add essential oils from one of the blends above.
- Secure lid and set timer.
Expert tips
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the maximum water level and avoid overfilling your diffuser to ensure its longevity.
Prolong the life of your diffuser by cleaning it regularly. Check out this post on how to clean a diffuser.

Diffuser dilution chart
Use this chart to work out how many drops to add to your diffuser, and always start with less since you can add more if you want it stronger.
- 200mL: 3-5 drops
- 300mL: 6-8 drops
- 400mL: 8-10 drops
Those amounts are for general use around the house. In a kid’s bedroom I go lighter and stick with 4 to 6 drops, and I start at the low end every time!
Choosing the right diffuser
If you are anything like me, choosing a diffuser from the countless options can be overwhelming.
I try not to overthink it and follow a few simple guidelines:
- Stick with a cool mist diffuser. That is what I have always used, and heat can change the scent of the oils.
- Reservoir size. If you don’t know what size to get, go with a 300mL diffuser.
- Coverage time. Does it have a timer? How long will it run? Will it auto shut off when the reservoir runs dry?
Here are a few of my favorite diffusers:
Essential oil safety
A few simple habits keep diffusing easy and tidy around the house.
- Be mindful of the quality and sourcing of the brand you are using.
- Always properly dilute oils, as they are very concentrated. You can learn more about diluting oils here.
- Keep diffusers out of reach from little hands to prevent them from accidentally tipping and spilling the contents.
- Avoid diffusing essential oils in enclosed spaces. Always keep a door or window open to allow for proper ventilation.
Diffuser blend FAQs
It depends on the size of your diffuser, so I use 3 to 5 drops in a 200 mL, 6 to 8 in a 300 mL, and 8 to 10 in a 400 mL. Those are for general use around the house, and in a kid’s bedroom I go lighter and stick with 4 to 6 drops.
It’s generally recommended to diffuse essential oils for 30-60 minutes at a time, then take a break. This allows your body to adjust to the scent and prevents sensory overload.
While diffusers can be used in bedrooms, a door or window should be left open to allow proper airflow.

My 3 yr old wanted up every night crying with leg pain. Could essential oils help with that?
Thank you!
Hi Laura,
Thank you for these recipies. I am looking for colic remedy. Have you used the Tumy Trouble Blend for the tummy massage or diffusing?
I know Dottera offers ZenGest or Tamer for digestive issues. Have you used these blends diluted for the newborn tummy issues instead? What is your opinion please?
Thank you so much!
You can use them, just dilute them. I have a post about using essential oils on newborns, that will help!
I am looking into getting my two daughters oil diffuser for there rooms and wanted to know if the one pictured (Doterra) is the one you use and if so where can you purchase it at and if not any suggestions on a good one?
Thank you
That one was a Christmas special last year and isn’t currently available. Though they do have similar cute ones on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Q8CHF2
I am researching how to use Doterra for my 6 month old granddaughter. Any suggestions? She currently has a cold. But I want to help my daughter learn how to use them for teething, sleep issues, digestion etc. I know there’s a lot of “scare” articles out there. But what is safe?
I have several blog posts about essential oils for kids! Check out my 6 roller bottles for kids. That has lots of recipes and information for child’s most common ailments.
Hi there, thanks for the article. I was wondering if you could answer something for me. Can you use essential oils everyday? My wife just ordered some so I’m trying to get some info about them. Thanks in advance for your answer!
Yes you can! I have a free online essential oil class, it has a lot of information you may be interested in. Here is the link: https://shopoils.com/laura-ascher/
