WHY DIY FACE WASH?
If you have been around the blog long, you know I am a big fan of making my own homemade products to cut down on chemicals in my home. I find that making my own is the best option and can save you money!
Unfortunately, most conventional face washes you find at the store are loaded with toxins and chemicals you won’t want in your home or touching your skin. Here are a few of the many chemicals that can be found in conventional face cleaners:
PARABENS
Parabens are a group of compounds used as a preservative to prevent bacteria and mold from growing in most face washes, cosmetics, and personal products. It sounds like a good thing, but they also have some major drawbacks. They mimic estrogen and cause hormone imbalances. Parabens are found in 99% of breast cancer tumors!
SYNTHETIC COLORS AND FRAGRANCE
Artificial colors, dyes, and fragrances can cause allergic reactions, contain hormone disturbers, carcinogens, and have been linked to damage sperm. Some dyes, like red40, are banned in other countries. Use your essential oils instead of fragrance for a natural alternative and their health benefits.
TRICLOSAN
Triclosan is an antibacterial agent and preservative found in personal care and home cleaning products. It is a hormone disruptor; and can irritate the skin, lungs, and eyes. It is especially dangerous for the thyroid. Because of its antibacterial properties, it can also be damaging for our gut flora and pose a problem with the good and bad bacteria balance in our bodies.
Have you ever made your own face wash, scrub, or toner? What ingredients did you use and what were your results? I love hearing from you!

Laura says
You are so welcome! I am so glad you are enjoying my recipes!
Vickie says
Hello, I love your recipes. I have made body wash, eczema cream, body butter and face wash. They all work great and my skin is very appreciative.
I’ve used the sensitive face wash with great result. But I would like the benefits of the anti-aging also. Do you think it would be ok to combine the two?
My skin is super sensitive but has done very well with your recipes.
Thank you!
Laura says
Hi Vickie, the ingredients in the anti-aging face wash are quite gentle. You could cut the amount of EOs in half and just use a little bit of the wash at a time to see how your skin reacts.
Lu says
Hi, do you have a recipe for combo skin(oily/dry)? Are these meant for daily use too? Thank you!
Laura says
Hi Lu, with the exception of the dry skin & acne-prone skin recipes, these can be used daily.
Vickie says
Is there a substitute for baking soda?
Laura says
Hi Vickie, I would suggest trying one of the other face wash recipes in this post! That may be easier than finding a substitute and possibly having to sacrifice results.
Let me know how it works for you!
Vickie says
I used arrowroot. My skin loved it.
But I would like the benefits of anti aging, do you think it would work to combine sensitive and anti aging?
Thank you for the great recipes.
Ellie Juckes says
Hi
I love all your recipes but I struggle to convert the US cup sizes and other measurements as they’re not the same as here in the UK apparently?! I’ve looked up conversion charts on line but every recipe I follow using these doesn’t turn out right. Do you have a conversion chart for our weights and measures for UK users?
Laura says
Hi, I do not have a conversion chart at this time. I’ll see about adding the weights in future posts.
Jeanette says
Hi, I have sensitive skin but I am a bit worried about the baking soda ingredient in the sensitive mask… it’s a pretty harsh ingredient. Do any of the other ingredients ‘calm calm it down’ a bit?
Laura says
It’s not as intense when combined with the other ingredients. If you are worried about sensitivity issues, try the ‘oily’ skin recipe in this post.
Thalia Gazis says
Question: Is this fractionated coconut oil (liquid) or white solid coconut oil?
Laura says
Solid
Clara Koen says
Hi Laura
Thank you for your super blog and all the do- able recipes!
Can I replace these 2 essential oils in the anti ageing wash…. helichrysum and myth?
Have you used castor oil? I was reading how good it is for hair growth and particularly eye news and lashes?
Thank you again 💐
Laura says
Yes, you can substitute or omit any of the oils.
Carolyn ANN Williams says
What ingredient should be added to keep honey emulsified in honey body wash and face wash?
Laura says
I just shake well before each use.
Nadine Singleton says
Hi Laura, I would love to try these recipes but, not sure which one is right for me. My skin is mostly normal but, because I live in the dry desert at times it is dry and flakey. Please help me decide. Thank you Nadine
Laura says
I would do the one for dry skin.
Shari Rogers says
Thank you for these suggestions. I have a question: about how long can the cleansers be stored? I’ll be doing the oily skin one, and I need to know how long it’ll stay usable.
Laura says
I make them for the week and then make a new batch, they are best fresh!
Connie says
U had a really neat body wash and it was when you get out it just felt your skin felt so sweet so nice and soft and it is not the one with the honey in it because it stinks and it doesn’t make your skin that moist and I found it in your book that I download it but I can’t find it anywhere and I really need your book again so I can download that body wash I mean can you please send it to me
Laura says
Search “body wash” in my search bar at the top of the blog and it will pop up.
ANGELA says
Hello, Thank you for sharing all your healthy recipes with others. Thank you for your kindness. I just made the facial cleanser for sensitive skin. All your recipes are made with natural ingredients, but I have some questions?
1) Should I keep all the recipes in my refrigerator?
2) can I keep these recipes outside of my refrigerator or for how long these
recipes can stay outside of the fridge?
3) for how long are these recipes good to use or the expiration date?
you have many different recipes from soaps to skin care and many more . I would like if you can put some information about that. I am afraid to put something that has gotten spoiled on my skin. Thank you very much .
Regards
Angela

For all of my DIYS, anything that contains water I will keep in the refrigerator for a month and if it doesn’t have water than it is OK outside of the fridge.
Kendra says
I’ve found your DIY body deodorant based on magnesium oil suitable for me! And would like to try the DIY face cleanser. Is the anti-aging recipe suitable for sensitive & oily skin as well?
Laura says
Yes! I would use the anti-aging recipe.
Tiffany G. says
How long of a shelf life does the sensitive skin and anti aging have? I want to make these for me and my girls! Thank you so much for your amazing posts!!
Laura says
It should be good up to one month.
