This homemade body butter for glowing skin will leave your skin glowing, smooth, and moisturized while restoring dry, damaged skin.
Homemade body butter for glowing skin can be made with just a few nourishing, all-natural ingredients.
Using this body butter daily will hydrate dry skin and leave it glowing.
Making your skincare products is much easier than you may think. You do not need special equipment or crazy ingredients to make things like homemade whipped body butter, rose clay face masks, or even beauty products like homemade foundation.
Not only do I enjoy making my own skincare items, like my homemade tallow balm recipe, but it is very important to me to know exactly what I’m putting on my skin.
Why You’ll Love It
- This body butter will have your skin looking and feeling better than ever! You’ll love having soft, healthy, glowing skin.
- Making your own skincare products is an excellent way to live more eco-friendly. You can use the same jar over and over again and choose only sustainable, all-natural ingredients for your body butter.
- DIY body butter is so customizable! You can swap out different butters, oils, and essential oils for a product that is perfect for you.
Ingredients
- Mango butter: Rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and E, mango butter is great for skin health. It is moisturizing and nourishing, and may help protect the skin against UV rays.
- Cocoa butter: Cocoa butter is hydrating and soothing, and it smells like chocolate! It is also high in fatty acids, which help moisturize and improve skin elasticity.
- Coconut oil: This is one of my most-used skincare ingredients because it has so many skin-healthy benefits! It’s deeply moisturizing and may improve skin tone. I also use coconut oil to make homemade coconut oil lip scrub and DIY anti-aging face cream.
- Jojoba oil: You can use any carrier oil for this, but I chose jojoba oil because of its immense benefits for skin health. Jojoba oil is an antioxidant, antibacterial, and it may even have anti-aging benefits, just to name a few.
- Vitamin E oil: A group of fat-soluble vitamins with antioxidants, vitamin E oil is amazing for your skin. It’s moisturizing, soothing, and can help reduce the appearance of scars and wrinkles, which are all important for glowing, healthy skin!
- Arrowroot powder: Adding arrowroot powder to body butter reduces its greasiness, gives it a smooth texture, and improves the overall skin feel.
- Essential oils: I use lavender and tea tree oil for scent and additional benefits for the skin, like moisturizing, soothing irritation, and treating acne.
How to Make Homemade Body Butter for Glowing Skin
Step 1. Cut mango and cocoa butter into small chunks. Melt both butters and coconut oil in a double boiler.
Step 2. After the mixture is melted together, place the bowl in the refrigerator until it is set up a bit. You don’t want it to be completely solid.
Step 3. Add in the jojoba oil, arrowroot powder, essential oils, and vitamin E oil.
Step 4. Using a hand mixer or stand-up mixer, whip the ingredients together for about 5 minutes.
Step 5. Transfer to an airtight container for storage.
Step 6. Use on hands, legs, arms, and back to moisturize the skin.
How to Use Body Butter
You will see the best results when used daily. Whipped body butter can be applied to the skin in the morning, at night, or both.
Apply a generous amount to clean, dry skin. Massage it into the skin in a circular motion to allow the ingredients to absorb.
How to Store Homemade Body Butter
It is always best to store any DIY projects with essential oils in glass or metal. For example, I use a wide-mouth mason jar for all of my whipped body butter recipes.
The wide-mouth jar makes it easier to reach your hand in, even when you only have a little bit left.
This body butter will hold up just fine at room temperature. However, do not leave it in direct sunlight or anywhere subject to extreme temperatures, such as a vehicle.
Any temperature above 85° will require it to be stored in the refrigerator to prevent the body butter from losing its whipped consistency.
When stored in an airtight container, this body butter will last for one year.
Recipe Tips
- Butters such as mango, cocoa, and shea are the most common bases of any homemade body butter recipe. This recipe uses mango butter and cocoa butter, but feel free to substitute shea butter if your skin likes it better.
- If your body butter doesn’t hold the air after whipping, put it in the fridge for a few minutes and try again. It may not have been cold enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Body butter and lotion are both skin moisturizers, but they have a few key differences. Body butter is thicker and richer, and it’s intended for deep hydration. Lotion is lighter and slightly less hydrating, but it soaks in quickly, perfect for quick moisture on the go. I like to keep both body butter and homemade lotion on hand for different times of the day and skin needs.
Body butter has a shelf life of about a year when stored properly. Be sure to keep it in an airtight container out of direct sunlight.
That’s entirely up to your preference and skin! Some find that body butter is too oily or heavy for their face, while others love the wonderful moisturizing properties. I recommend trying it and seeing how your skin reacts.

Hi Laura is it the both oils that I will use or just one of them
I love this. My daughter and I love to make all kinds of things with our essential oils, and this one is her favorite. Great for teachers gifts around the holidays. ❤️
I’m looking forward to making this body butter, instructions quite easy. Thank you for sharing
Would there be any major downsides to adding a small amount of honey?
Hi Laura,
Thank you for sharing this recipe 🙏
When I made this, it became very solid after a day, do you know what I’m doing wrong, I used all the right amounts. It’s happened to me with a lot of the products I’ve made that included the butters (hand cream, and moisturiser, hair conditioner) they all turn really hard 🙁 I used an electric mixer when whipping. Am I whipping it incorrectly?
Thanks so much
Nicole
They shouldn’t be solid but they are really thick. I have made it several times and they are always very thick. You can remelt and add in some more carrier oils.
Could I use four different essential oils in the body butter?
Yes!
Mine turned out more runny than the picture looks. Is there a reason for that or did I do something wrong?
It basically looks like yogurt, but just a little runnier.
For a fluffier/thicker body butter, let it set up in the fridge and then whip it with a hand mixer.
Thanks!
