Making your skincare products is much easier than you may think. You do not need special equipment or crazy ingredients to make things like homemade whipped body butter, rose clay face masks, or even beauty products like foundation.
Not only do I enjoy making my own skincare items, but it is very important to me to know precisely the ingredients going on my body.
The skin is the largest organ, and everything put on it gets absorbed into the skin, so what you put on your body really does matter.

HOMEMADE BODY BUTTER FOR GLOWING SKIN
Making your own glowing skin body butter is actually quite simple.
Butters such as mango, cocoa, and shea are the most common bases of any homemade body butter recipe. Depending on skin type or what you are making it for will determine which butter you want to use.
I am using mango butter and cocoa butter for this recipe because they are the best for glowing skin. The vitamin C found in mango butter will help brighten skin, and vitamin A improves skin tone.
And Cocoa butter can help to lighten skin imperfections, dark spots, and dark patches of skin.
BEST INGREDIENTS FOR GLOWING SKIN BODY BUTTER
A good body butter contains mango butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, essential oils, and a carrier oil. Adding arrowroot powder will help absorb some of the oils and make the body butter non-greasy.
MANGO BUTTER
Mango butter is loaded with antioxidants and fatty acids that are great for the skin. It is perfect for improving skin tone, reducing age spots, and signs of anti-aging.
Mango butter is very moisturizing and can help anyone who suffers from extremely dry skin.
It has vitamins A, C, and E in it. All of which are vital for healthy glowing skin. Mango butter can cleanse and purify the skin when used on the skin.
COCOA BUTTER
Cocoa butter is one of my favorite butters for skincare because it smells incredible! It also has some great benefits for the skin. Cocoa butter is very hydrating and nourishing to the skin.
Cocoa butter is known for helping with skin rashes and irritations.
COCONUT OIL
We already know that coconut oil is a superfood and has amazing benefits for our overall wellness. Coconut oil also has great benefits for the skin.
I use it to make lip scrub and anti-aging face cream.
Coconut oil can reduce inflammation, cleanse and heal skin wounds, and hydrate the skin.
It is a key ingredient when it comes to achieving glowing skin because it can help to improve skin tone and lighten dark spots.
Coconut oil reduces signs of aging, helps prevent skin infections, and moisturizes dry skin.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Adding essential oils to body butter will not only provide additional benefits, but the essential oils will make it smell amazing!
Some of my favorite essential oils for the skin are frankincense, tea tree, lavender, geranium, rose, and sandalwood.
The best essential oils for glowing skin are lavender and tea tree. Both of these oils are great for sensitive skin, which can help improve skin tone and purify the skin.
Other oils you can use are lemongrass, frankincense, and sandalwood.
CARRIER OIL
A carrier oil is a vegetable, seed, or nut-based oil that is commonly used to dilute essential oils. Some of the most common carrier oils are fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and olive oil.
I am using jojoba oil for this recipe because it is the best carrier oil for glowing skin. In addition, jojoba oil is antibacterial, full of antioxidants, and can soothe dry, patchy skin.
ARROWROOT POWDER
Arrowroot powder is a powder extracted from the arrowroot plant. It is commonly used to thicken dishes or add texture to baked goods. Using this powder in body butter reduces its greasiness.
The added arrowroot powder gives the body butter a perfect and smooth texture. It is optional; however, I highly recommend adding it.
The arrowroot powder will absorb some of the oils in the recipe, making it less oily on the skin.

INGREDIENTS
- 1/4 cup mango butter
- 1/8 cup cocoa butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
- 5 drops tea tree essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 drops vitamin E oil, optional
INSTRUCTIONS
- Cut mango and cocoa butter into small chunks.
- Melt both butters and coconut oil in a double boiler.
- After the mixture is melted together, place the bowl in the refrigerator until it is set up a bit. You don’t want it to be completely solid.
- Add in the jojoba oil, arrowroot powder, essential oils, and vitamin E oil.
- Using a hand mixer or stand-up mixer, whip the ingredients together for about 5 minutes.
- Store in an airtight container.
HOW TO USE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER FOR GLOWING SKIN
You will see the best results when used daily. Whipped body butter can be applied to the skin in the morning, at night, or both.
Apply a generous amount to clean, dry skin. Massage it into the skin in a circular motion to allow the ingredients to absorb.
HOW TO STORE HOMEMADE BODY BUTTER
It is always best to store any DIY projects with essential oils in glass or metal. For example, I use a wide-mouth mason jar for all of my whipped body butter recipes.
The wide-mouth jar makes it easier to reach your hand in, even when you only have a little bit left.
This body butter will hold up just fine at room temperature. However, do not leave in direct sunlight or anywhere subject to extreme temperatures, such as a vehicle.
Any temperature above 85° will require it to be stored in the refrigerator to prevent the body butter from losing its whipped consistency.
When stored in an airtight container, this body butter will last for one year.

Would there be any major downsides to adding a small amount of honey?

Hi Laura,
Thank you for sharing this recipe 🙏
When I made this, it became very solid after a day, do you know what I’m doing wrong, I used all the right amounts. It’s happened to me with a lot of the products I’ve made that included the butters (hand cream, and moisturiser, hair conditioner) they all turn really hard 🙁 I used an electric mixer when whipping. Am I whipping it incorrectly?
Thanks so much
Nicole
Laura says
They shouldn’t be solid but they are really thick. I have made it several times and they are always very thick. You can remelt and add in some more carrier oils.

Could I use four different essential oils in the body butter?
Laura says
Yes!

Mine turned out more runny than the picture looks. Is there a reason for that or did I do something wrong?
Brielle Bluth says
It basically looks like yogurt, but just a little runnier.
Laura says
For a fluffier/thicker body butter, let it set up in the fridge and then whip it with a hand mixer.

Hi Laura:
I made this fantastic body butter and love it!
To get an accurate amount I weigh the listed ingredients and find this works for me instead of measuring them, but I do use the suggested amount of drops!
Thank you for sharing this recipe.
