Making your own shaving cream is very simple, and you only need 4-ingredients. You will need coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, and essential oils for this recipe. All of these ingredients have excellent benefits for the skin!
COCONUT OIL
Coconut oil is found in many skincare products and for a good reason. It can protect the skin against anti-aging, dryness, imperfections, and even infections.
Coconut oil is a natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and it is very moisturizing for the skin. It is primarily made up of nourishing fatty acids and is really high in lauric acid. Coconut oil contains vitamin E and several healthy fats that help to make skin smooth.
Coconut oil can encourage collagen production and the regeneration of cells in your skin, which makes it effective for fading wrinkles and tightening the skin.
Coconut oil can be used as an effective face moisturizer and body butter.
SHEA BUTTER
I love the light earthy scent of shea butter. It goes perfectly in this shaving cream recipe because, like coconut oil, it is also very moisturizing to the skin.
It has high concentrations of fatty acids and vitamins that are great for the skin. Shea butter can be found in lotions, moisturizers, and other cosmetics that are made for softening the skin.
Shea butter has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Using shea butter on your body can improve skin tone, as well as moisturize and soothe the skin. Because it is so gentle, it is great for all skin types.
You can use shea butter to make DIY lip balm and lotion bars.
OLIVE OIL
Olive oil leaves a barrier on the skin, making it a great ingredient to add to the homemade shaving cream. It makes the skin extra smooth and soft, and it’s also full of antioxidants that help improve skin imperfections.
Olive oil can also protect the skin from razor burn and bumps because it is a natural lubricant.
You can make this recipe without the olive oil, but I added it in because it makes the shaving cream lighter and has added benefits for the skin.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Several essential oils can be used to protect the skin, such as against anti-aging, and can be used in beauty products such as men’s cologne or beard oil. The added essential oils will also add in a beautiful scent!
Using essential oils like peppermint or eucalyptus will add soothing properties that will leave the skin feeling cool.
For this DIY shaving cream, you can add a blend of essential oils or a single essential oil. This really is a matter of preference. I will share several blends below for you to choose from.
BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN
Some of my favorite essential oils for skin include frankincense, tea tree, lavender, rose, yarrow pom, and myrrh. All of these essential oils can help with most skin imperfections and anti-aging. However, there are several more that can be used to improve the skin too.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE SHAVING CREAM
Making homemade shaving cream is very easy! We are going to be using: coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, and essential oils. You will also need a double boiler, a hand mixer, and an airtight storage container.
- Add the coconut oil and shea butter to a double boiler and heat over medium heat.
- Once all the ingredients are melted, remove the bowl from the heat.
- Add in the olive oil.
- Once the mixture has cooled slightly, add in the essential oils.
- Place the bowl in the freezer until it’s set up a bit. You don’t want it to be solid just firm.
- Using a hand mixer or stand-up mixer, whip the ingredients together.
- Store in an airtight container.
If you do not have a double boiler, you can make your own if you don’t want to buy one. Simply place a glass bowl over a pot of water and bring it to a boil. I have used the “homemade” double boiler for so many of my recipes, and it works great!
HOW TO USE DIY SHAVING CREAM?
This homemade shaving cream can be used on the face, legs, and armpits when you are ready to shave, wet the area and then apply the shaving cream. You will quickly notice that you won’t need a lot as a little goes a long way.
HOW LONG DOES HOMEMADE SHAVING CREAM LAST?
This shaving cream recipe will last up to one year.
HOW TO STORE HOMEMADE SHAVING CREAM?
It is always best to store any DIY skincare products that are made with essential oils in a glass storage container. This is because, over time, essential oils can break down plastic and pull out the toxins, leaving them in your homemade product.
Store your DIY shaving cream in a glass container with an airtight lid. It is best to keep it out of direct sunlight.
Like most of my DIY, I prefer to store my shaving cream in a wide-mouth mason jar. Using a wide-mouth mason jar is best so you can get your hand in the jar, making it easier to get the shaving cream out when it is getting low.

I am not sure which blend you are referring too?

Isn’t that the doTerra holiday scent? Oh, I would love to have that recipe as well.
Laura says
They have a couple of blends. I love them both!
Jo says
I love the sound of this recipe but surely using coconut oil when shaving in the bath or shower would clog your drains?
Laura says
I haven’t had any issues personally, but I am not a plumber so I don’t know for sure. We have used a coconut oil-based toothpaste for years and never had any problems.
Jade says
How much does this make? Wanting to make it for groomsmen (10 of them) and wondering how I should multiple the ingredients!!
Laura says
This makes about a cup. So I guess it depends on how much you want to give to each person. ALSO, I love that idea! So fun!

I just made this for my husband to use and he gave me this review:
He wet his face and applied with his shaving brush. He said it doesn’t later and it’s a bit too oily. He shaves before he showers so he can clean off but thinking to get the full benefits from the oils I suggested he should shower first & then shave. Is there something I can do next time to give him the lather he’s looking for?
~thanks😊
Laura says
Thanks for the review! Anytime you are switching to homemade it won’t be the exact same as the store-bought kind. Vegetable glycerin can help to have lather and you can add a small amount of arrowroot powder to help with the oily feeling.
Nicole says
I’m response to the last comment- if adding vegetable glycerin and arrowroot- just a tad of each to posted formula to help w lather and less oily feeling?
Laura says
Yes, I would do 1 teaspoon of each. 🙂

It feels good on my face before shaving and good afterwards but the problem is it clogs the razor during shaving. I use a Preserve triple blade razor and have to use an old toothbrush to constantly declog the blades. Using a cup of hot water or rinsing the razor with hot water doesn’t help. I also tried a single blade razor and it was worse. I’ll probably end up using it as a hand cream or something unless someone has a solution
Unknown says
I’m curious about this as well. Love the cream, but my razor clogs up too.
Nick says
I’ve experienced similar issue. I think the only solution is to use one of those old school single blade razors that looks like a knife. You know the ones that Barbors’ use.
