These rainbow bath bombs are super fun for the kids, are easy to make, and would make the perfect gift. Made with all-natural ingredients and colored with mica powder, these homemade bath bombs are nourishing for the skin.
I have always wanted to come up with a bath bomb recipe for kids. My littles love to take baths in the big bathtub.
We have a jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom, and tossing one of those little fizzers in can turn any bathtime into a tremendous time!
My daughter loves to help me with all of my DIY’s and anytime she gets involved, so does the mica powder. Mica powder is what we use for a natural coloring.
We decided to try our hand at making rainbow bath bombs. Can you guess who’s idea that was? They turned out so cute and it was much easier than I expected.
DIY BATH BOMBS FOR KIDS
A simple bath bomb any day of the week for an adult is nice, but I wanted to come up with a recipe that would make bathtime more enjoyable for kids who otherwise would frown on the idea of having a clean body.
When making bath bombs for kids, using multiple colors can often do the trick.
Rainbow bath bombs are made by separating the pre-mixed bath bomb mixture in small bowls and adding color.
Then pack each color into even layers inside the molds. Press the two halves together with as much force as you can between your hands.
There should have been enough excess that the two sides do not quite touch.
I also wanted to use nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, essential oils, and Epsom salt.
So while your child is having fun, they are also soaking in ingredients that are good for their skin and muscles.
BATH BOMB RECIPE FOR KIDS
You will need a few basic ingredients and supplies, bath bomb molds, a spray bottle, and essential oils for this recipe.
The essential oils are optional, but adding them will give off aromatherapy benefits.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE RAINBOW BATH BOMBS
Full recipe in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Baking soda
- Citric acid
- Cornstarch
- Epsom salt
- Coconut oil
- Essential oils, optional
- Mica powder
- Spray bottle
- Bath bomb molds (I have these.)
If you don’t have bath bomb molds, you can make fizzing bath salts. This recipe is similar to a bath bomb but requires no mold.
HOW TO MAKE BATH BOMBS FOR KIDS
- Mix all the dry ingredients in a medium-size bowl. Stir until well incorporated.
- Add in the coconut oil and essential oils if used. Whisk well.
- Using a spray bottle, spray the mixture with water until the ingredients hold together when squeezed in your hands. Only do one spray at a time as you don’t want the mixture over-saturated.
- Prepare your molds by greasing them with coconut oil. Plastic easter eggs work well as an alternative to the bath bomb molds.
- Separate the mixture into 5 bowls. Add a different color of mica powder to each bowl. Start off with 1/8 teaspoon of coloring and add more if needed. I used red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.
- On one side of the bath bomb mold, add red, then orange. On the other side of the mold, add blue, then green. Then mound the yellow on both sides of the molds (about a 1/4″ excess). Firmly press the two sides together. Wipe the excess mixture off the sides and set it aside.
- Allow the molds to sit for 24-48 hours or until completely dry and then pop out of the molds.
RAINBOW BATH BOMBS
Once you get the hang of the recipe and try it a few times, you’ll find it’s really quite simple to make these in any color.
I went for the traditional rainbow the first time. Add pink, purple, and white to a mold to make a unicorn bath bomb.
Get the kids involved by letting them paint the bath bombs. First, make plain white bath bombs.
Then, in a bowl, combine 1/3 teaspoon of mica powder with 1 teaspoon of isopropyl alcohol and stir it together. Using a small paintbrush, let them design the bath bombs.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HOMEMADE BATH BOMBS
Adding essential oils to bath bombs is a great way to disperse the oils into the air. Since this recipe is for kids, I reduced the amount of essential oils by one-half.
Essential oils are very concentrated and need to be diluted properly for kids.
In a typical relaxing bath bomb recipe, I use about 20 drops of essential oils. For these rainbow bath bombs for kids, I am going to use 10 drops of essential oil in total.
My favorite essential oils to use for kids are lavender, wild orange, frankincense, and roman chamomile. These oils are very gentle on the skin and have wonderful benefits for little ones.
ESSENTIAL OIL BLENDS FOR BATH BOMBS
RELAXING
- 5 drops lavender
- 3 drops frankincense
- 2 drops Roman chamomile
CITRUS
- 5 drops wild orange
- 3 drops lime
- 2 drops lemon
SOOTHING
- 5 drops copaiba
- 3 drops lavender
- 2 drops spearmint
HOW TO USE BATH BOMBS
Fill your bathtub with warm water and place the bath bomb in the water. It will slowly fizz and dissolve into the water.
My kids love to hold them while in the water and feel the fizz in their hands.
WHAT IS MICA POWDER?
Mica is a natural stone that has shiny flakes in it. It is made into mica powder by finely grinding into powder.
Oftentimes, mica powders have a slight glimmer to them and look sparkly.
Mica powder is used in bath bombs, homemade soap bars, bubble bath bars, and even DIY lip gloss. Crafters use it in paint, glue, and pottery.
HOW LONG DO BATH BOMBS LAST?
DIY bath bombs will last about 6 months. The ingredients used to make bath bombs have a long shelf life.
Citric acid will lose potency over time and may cause the bath bomb not to fizz as well if it is older than 6 months.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STORE BATH BOMBS?
Bath bombs should be stored in a cool, dry place. They look pretty stacked in a clear, heavy-duty BPA-free plastic container sitting on the side of the bathtub. As long as they stay dry, they can be stored anywhere or in anything.

these sound perfect – what age group do the essential oil blends cover – i would hate to give them to a too young kiddie and cause problems for them
thanks
