Learn how to make homemade all-natural toothpaste with essential oils. Full video tutorial and free printable labels.
If you stick around my blog long, you will find out that I like to make a lot of homemade products to get rid of toxins in my home. One of the first things I started making was toothpaste.
I still use this same toothpaste recipe and I love that it works great for kids too. This toothpaste can protect from cavities, strengthen gums, and whiten teeth.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH CONVENTIONAL TOOTHPASTE?
Removing conventional items full of toxins and chemicals from of my home was a top priority when I first started using essential oils.
Have you ever read the warning label on the back of your toothpaste tube? Mine says, ” KEEP out of reach of children. If more is swallowed than the normal amount used for brushing, get medical help or contact poison control right away.”
YIKES! Something that my kids see me put in my mouth could greatly harm them if they put it in their mouth. This is why I decided to make my own toothpaste with natural and safe ingredients.
HOMEMADE TOOTHPASTE INGREDIENTS
- Calcium carbonate
- Xylitol
- Baking soda
- Coconut oil
- Essential oils (see my favorites listed below)
HOW TO MAKE TOOTHPASTE
- Mix 5 parts calcium carbonate, 3 parts xylitol, and 2 parts baking soda in a bowl.
- Add 5 drops of clove bud and 15 drops of peppermint essential oil. (Or check out other essential oils you can use below)
- Add 4 parts coconut oil and mix until well combined.
- Store your toothpaste in an airtight container. That simple!
You can make any quantity you want! I do this with tablespoon amounts and usually, double this recipe.
Precautions
Consult with your healthcare provider before using this toothpaste.
Do not ingest.
Some people may have sensitivities to essential oils.
Ensure the ingredients you are using are safe for internal use.
BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HOMEMADE TOOTHPASTE
- Peppermint– Add peppermint essential oil to help freshen breathe and leave the mouth feeling clean.
- Spearmint– Spearmint doesn’t have as strong of a mint flavor as peppermint and my kids prefer it. I add a few drops of this into their toothpaste to freshen breath.
- Clove– Everyone should add a few drops of clove to their homemade toothpaste. Clove has powerful cleansing and purifying properties.
- Wild Orange– Wild orange will help cleanse the mouth.
- Cinnamon– Cinnamon essential oil can be used to freshen breathe and naturally whiten teeth.
- Make sure the essential oils you choose are pure and recommended for internal use.

Hi
A quick update on my above message. Adding fractionated coconut oil has worked a treat hurray!!! I added half extra virgin and half fractionated and it has been wonderful. A bit more runnier but it’s winter here so I don’t mind but in Summer I might do 3:1 ratio
Thanks again for the recipe now I really enjoy it ❤️

Hi Laura
What a great recipe I have been using this recipe since a month now and i would like to keep using it however in our colder weather it has hardened quite a lot almost like powdery.
Can I add half fractionated coconut oil and the rest normal coconut oil to avoid that? I had to add a lot of coconut oil which was way over portion to make it pasty to start with. Please advise ! Thank you
Laura says
I am so glad you enjoy the recipe! Yes, you can try that and see if it helps.

First, let me say thank you for sharing. I am anxious to make this toothpaste. I am not good with measurements unless it is using a measuring cup or spoons. Lol! My question is what do you mean when you say 5 parts, 3 parts of, etc. Thank you.
Laura says
Use 5 tablespoons to 3 tablespoons OR you can do 5 teaspoons to 3 teaspoons. This makes it easy to make whatever amount you need/want to make!

I absolutely love this toothpaste. I made it a few months ago and have used it since. My teeth always feel so clean and healthy after I brush with it!
I will say that it can be a little bit difficult to scoop out of the jar during the colder months because the coconut oil hardens up. But I think it’s totally worth it to use a natural toothpaste. Besides, when you have to take more time to get toothpaste out of your jar, it kinda makes brushing your teeth seem more like a self care habit!
Laura says
I am so glad you are enjoying the toothpaste! Thanks for sharing!

Laura says

Laura says
Thank you so much!
Melissa Vigue says
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I have seen other recipes that use bentonite clay. Is that something you have tried before and would you recommend it?
Laura says
I have not tried clay in my toothpaste yet. I have a bentonite clay face mask on the blog that I love!
Nancy says
I bought some peppermint oil to use in toothpaste. The label says “For external use only” “dilute in a base oil” “Do not use directly on skin”. Am I using the wrong kind? Or should I ignore the warning for this purpose?
Laura says
The brand can be a big factor in this and if it says not safe for internal use I would not use it internally. I use doTERRA and it is safe for internal use.
Lynette says
Do your family members share the same jar? If so, Does that introduce shared germs into the whole jar? Can’t wait to try this!
Laura says
We do share the same jar. You can use a clean popsicle stick (or something similar) to scoop the toothpaste out onto the toothbrush.
Theologia says
Hi Lora instead of xylitol can I put stevia powder and in what portion?I don’t know what is the calcium. Thanks
Laura says
I have the calcium linked. Xylitol is a sweetener but it also has benefits for the teeth. You can use stevia instead and just add to your taste preference.
Angie Mtz says
Hi Laura, congratulations for your blog! Your DIY recipes really works!
One doubt, I´m from Mexico and here is difficult to find xylitol, is there a substitute ingredient?
Thanks a lot for your reply.
lauraascher says
Thank you! Can you order it on amazon? IF not, you can make it without it, as it is mainly for taste. You can also add in a few drops of liquid stevia for flavor.
Alejandra Pena says
Im looking forward to trying this recipe! But I’m wondering what the calcium carbonate is for. Does it help with tooth decay or tooth enamel?
I have baking soda, coconut oil, the essential oils, and activated charcoal. would those ingredients work just as well?
Laura says
It helps to remove plaque when brushing and gently polishes away surface stains.
Devi says
hi Laura,
is there a substitute for the calcium carbonate?
Laura says
You can emit it from the recipe, it is optional.
Jo says
This is one of the most pleasant tasting homeade toothpastes I have tried! I usually get the tooth powder from lush, but it always leaves a little burning sensation because of the bicarb. This leaves nothing but my mouth feeling clean!
lauraascher says
Thanks for your comment! I am glad you like it!
Angele says
Do you really need to put the calcium carbonate?
Laura says
It is optional.
