This DIY mosquito repellent bracelet can keep bugs away and can be customized any way you want it! Bug repellent bracelets also make a great gift for anyone on your list, and it is very practical.

I can’t believe it is already mid-August! Every year I get sad to think of summer being over, even though I love the fall. Something about the long nights, endless swimming, and fresh produce makes the summer months magical.

Even though fall is right around the corner, the temperatures are still hot and the bugs are still out. I love using my essential oils for natural bug repellent. I have already shared a bug repellent spray and a bug repellent lotion bar, and now I am excited to show you how to make a bug repellent bracelet.

An essential oil diffuser bracelet is made out of porous materials that can absorb essential oils easily. You can make your own out of clay or buy beads specifically meant for diffuser jewelry. The best beads to use for essential oil diffuser jewelry are lava stone, wood, leather, or clay.

You can get as creative as you wish when it comes to making your own diffuser bracelets. I have made some out of clay before, and it is super easy. I have also bought kits on amazon that come with lava beads, elastic string, and separators. Both ways are great options!

As you wear the diffuser bracelet, you will receive aromatic benefits from the essential oils on the beads and get topical benefits as the oils rub off onto the skin. Certain essential oils can be added to the bracelet to ward off insects naturally. You can also make an essential oil diffuser necklace or ankle bracelet if you prefer.

BUG REPELLENT BRACELET

Several essential oils can be used to repel insects. Almost all insects do not like strong scents and most, particularly do not like the smell of peppermint. Other oils that can help to repel insects are thyme, cedarwood, ylang ylang, lemon, eucalyptus, arborvitae, and citronella.

To make a bug repellent bracelet, simply add a few essential oils from the list above to your bracelet. Be cautious when using citrus essential oils as certain ones can be photosensitive and shouldn’t be worn in direct sunlight.

If you have sensitive skin or if you are making a bracelet for a child, you can dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil before applying it to the bracelet to avoid any skin irritations. As always, it is best to dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin. If you have any type of reaction, remove the bracelet right away and apply a carrier oil to the area of concern.

HOW TO MAKE CLAY DIFFUSER BEADS

For my bracelet, I am using a combination of handmade clay diffuser beads and store-bought lava beads.

  1. Start off by taking a small piece of clay and rolling it into a ball. If using other decorative beads, make the clay bead about the same size.
  2. Thread the beads through a toothpick or a bamboo skewer to make a hole through it.
  3. Let the beads dry for 12-24 hours. Once they are completely dry, remove them from the skewer.
  4. At this point, you can paint them if you wish!
  5. Take a piece of hemp cord or elastic string to make your bracelet. String the clay beads and decorative beads onto the string. Measure around your wrist and cut the size you need.

NOTE: If you are using elastic string and the string starts to ravel, just add a little clear nail polish to the string to stop it from raveling. This also makes it easier to string the beads.

You do not have to use all diffuser beads on your bracelet. Regular metal or plastic beads can be used for the majority of the bracelet as long as you have a few porous beads to add some essential oils too. I would suggest spreading them out so you can add essential oils throughout the bracelet.

HOW TO USE BUG REPELLENT WRISTBANDS

Add 2-3 drops of essential oils to a few of the porous beads. Put the bracelet on the wrist to receive aromatic benefits and naturally repel bugs. Add more essential oils as needed.

ESSENTIAL OILS FOR BUG REPELLENT

Choose a combination of the essential oils listed below to add to your bug repellent diffuser bracelet. Some of the best essential oils for repelling mosquitos are eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemongrass.

CAN KIDS USE THIS BUG REPELLENT DIFFUSER BRACELET?

If you are making this bracelet for a child, I would recommend you using less essential oils on the beads to dilute it further for them. You can also add a carrier oil to the beads before applying the essential oils.

Avoid adding any hot essential oils, like thyme, cinnamon, clove, or oregano to the bracelet to avoid skin sensitivities.

HOW TO CLEAN AN ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER BRACELET?

If you need to clean your diffuser bracelet, avoid getting water onto the homemade clay beads as they can break if they get wet. You can rinse the other parts of the bracelet with warm water. Your diffuser bracelet is very delicate, so avoid submerging it in water or scrubbing it to rough.
