This essential oil blend for bug bite relief is a must-have roller bottle to have on hand for summertime. Bugs bites can be annoying and very itchy; this blend will help relieve the seemingly constant itch. The roller bottle is easy to apply and can be used on the go to help with those irritating bug bites.
We love summertime over here! It is the time of year that I can actually keep my house clean because we spend more time outside than in. During the winter months, I can only remember the good things about summer and seem to forget about the few not-so-good things.
I never seem to remember the bugs, ticks, and poison ivy. As I said, we spend a lot of time outside and that is all just part of it. I do my best to prevent with homemade bug and tick repellent or my bug repellent lotion bars, but this roller bottle really comes in handy when we do get bit.
It is easy to apply and small enough to fit into your pocket when you go on a hiking or camping trip. I always keep it handy during the summer months for a quick bug bite itch relief!

TERRASHIELD
I have always loved using essential oils to repel ants and other pesky insects, but did you know there is a pre-made blend for repelling them?
DoTERRA’s terrashield is a great blend to use to make bug repellent if you have it.
Terrashield is doTERRA’s repellent blend and can be made into a spray for easy use. To make terrashield spray, simply add 20 drops of the terrashield blend to a 2-ounce glass spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with witch hazel.
If you don’t have it, you can make your own with these essential oils: ylang-ylang, tamanu seed, nootka, cedarwood, catnip, lemon, eucalyptus, litsea, vanilla bean absolute, and arborvitae.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR BUG BITES
Essential oils can be used to help relieve the itch from bug bites. Some have properties that make them effective against skin irritations that can result from scratching. Others have properties that make them effective at calming down irritated, red, and swollen skin.
We all know scratching bug bites, rashes, scabs, or any skin irritation can make it worse. Can you remember being told as a kid to stop scratching? But geez, it is hard and so much easier said than done.
These essential oils can help to stop the itch:
- Basil- This oil is amazing at relieving itch! If you only have basil, mix it with a little coconut oil and apply it to the bug bite and you will see how well it helps to stop the itch.
- Peppermint- All bugs seem to hate peppermint, which makes it great for bug repellent, plus it is very soothing for the skin, making it great for relieving bug bite itch.
- Tea Tree- Also known as melaleuca, this oil is another very effective bug repellent, especially in fighting bed bugs.
- Roman Chamomile- This oil is gentle enough for sensitive skin and wonderful to cool and soothe skin.
- Bergamont- Be careful using this one during the summertime, as it is photosensitive. Do not use on skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight.)
- Eucalyptus- Similar to peppermint, this oil helps to cool and soothe the skin from irritations.

It is important to dilute essential oils before applying them topically to the skin. This is why I love to make roller bottles. Roller bottles are mixed with a carrier oil, making them prediluted and ready to apply directly to the skin.
Fractionated coconut oil is my favorite carrier oil to use when making roller bottles. With its soothing properties, it can be effective for healing bug bites.
I also like to use this homemade anti-itch cream on bug bites.

HOW LONG DO ESSENTIAL OIL ROLLER BOTTLES LAST?
Essential oils practically never expire and if stored properly, they will never lose potency either. It is best to use dark-colored glass-like blue or amber. Always remember to store essential oils out of direct sunlight.
When stored properly, your essential oil roller bottle will be good for several years.
HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR BUG BITES
It is best to apply often to help to take away the itch and irritation. Roll the essential oil roller bottle directly onto the bite and around the bite as needed.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SPIDER BITES
If you suspect you were bitten by a spider, it is important to check with a doctor before trying any of these measures on your own.
Essential oils that can be helpful for spider bites are lavender, tea tree, and frankincense. You can make a roller bottle with these essential oils to apply to the spider bite.
If I suspect a spider bite, I will often apply my homemade drawing salve that is made with activated charcoal. Activated charcoal can help to pull toxins and poison out of the body.
I also like to spray a natural spider repellent if I suspect spiders are in my home.

is it safe for small kids?
Thanks for this recipe! I’m wondering if I don’t have all the essential oils if it’ll still work. Namely missing Basil & Bergamont essential oils? Should I be substituteing something else like Lavender or oregano? Needs to be infant and toddler safe too. Thanks. ๐
Hello!!! Thanks for sharing your recipe!!! If I wanted to make this into a speay instead would I just use witch hazel instead of coconut oil!
I was pleasantly surprised by how well this works. This time of year we have biting flies, the bites are as bad as red ant bites. Finally some relief. Thanks…..
I am so glad it is helping!
I live in Florida; If you get bit by fire ants it BURNS! But if you apply Lavender oil directly on the bites it will stop the burning feeling; it’s amazing how fast that works! A few days later the bites may start to itch, but you can apply the lavender oil again to help with that.
Thanks for sharing!
