We love a good pizza night around here, I mean, who doesn’t? My kids are not picky eaters by any means, but they definitely have preferences on the foods they eat. Sourdough pizza is one of their absolute favorites.

I love making sourdough pizza on weeknights because it is so easy to make, requires zero planning, and is made with gut-healthy sourdough.

This sausage sourdough pizza is made on a delicious sourdough crust that will take you less than 20 minutes to put together. I promise this recipe will become a family favorite that the kids will love!

Why You’ll Love It

Sourdough: I opt for sourdough for many of my meals because it promotes gut health, is lower in gluten, and is more easily digestible. This crust is made with just sourdough starter, so you’ll get all of the benefits of sourdough in your pizza.

Quick meal: The best thing about this recipe is the pizza dough doesn’t need to rise. That means you have pizza crust ready in only 20 minutes!

Customizable: A wonderful benefit of homemade pizza as a meal is it is completely customizable. You can alter the sauce, cheese, and toppings to cater to your family’s preferences. Plus, you’ll never get bored of it because of the near-limitless topping options!

Ingredients

Sausage sourdough pizza ingredients on a butcher block.
  • Sourdough starter: Ripe sourdough starter is all you need for the pizza crust “dough.” This is an excellent way to use up sourdough discard! If you don’t have a starter, you can purchase one, get it from a friend, or learn how to make your own.
  • Avocado oil: A drizzle of avocado oil keeps the crust from sticking to the skillet and gives it a nice texture. Olive oil will work too.
  • Italian seasoning: Gives the crust lots of delicious Italian flavor!
  • Salt: Essential for a flavorful crust. Most pizza crusts are made with salt kneaded into them; for this easy sourdough crust, we’ll sprinkle it on top.
  • Marinara sauce: I often use a jar of marinara sauce to keep the meal quick and easy, but feel free to make your own if you prefer.
  • Cheese: Mozzarella or pizza blend cheese is typical for pizza, but you can use whatever you have on hand.
  • Sausage: Pre-made Italian sausage will work, or learn how to make your own later in this post!
  • Vegetables: You can use any of your favorite pizza toppings! I use onion and bell peppers because they taste amazing with the sausage.
  • Cast iron skillet or pizza stone: I like to use my 12-inch cast iron skillets because they make the pizza the perfect shape and size, but a pizza stone will work just as well.

Expert Tips

  • Since we are using straight sourdough starter for this recipe, it is going to be sticky. This is why we need to make this in a cast-iron skillet or on a pizza stone.
  • It is also important to preheat the skillet or stone before putting the dough onto the skillet. This will prevent it from sticking. When cooking anything in a cast-iron skillet, it is always best to preheat it first.

Alternative Pizza Toppings

There are so many ways to top a pizza. The more the toppings the better, in my opinion! However, my kid’s favorite is a traditional sausage sourdough pizza. You really can’t go wrong with sausage on pizza.

You can easily make this recipe into a vegetarian pizza, plain cheese, or meat lovers. Top the pizza how you wish.

I am obsessed with onions and add them to everything I make. So of course, this pizza will have some onions on it. You can leave them out if you prefer.

Feel free to use any meat or veggies you like on a pizza! Spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, pepperoni, and more – you can’t go wrong with homemade pizza toppings.

Recipe FAQs

Does this pizza crust taste sour?

Yes, since it’s made with sourdough starter, the pizza will taste more sour than a regular yeast pizza crust. It is not overpowering though. In fact, we enjoy the flavor more!

How do I store leftovers?

Leftover pizza can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat the pizza in a toaster oven or your full-sized oven.
