I freely admit that lip oil is something I was a little unsure of to begin with.

Iโ€™m more of a lip balm fan, preferring a matte texture to gloss in many ways.

Then, one day, I questioned why. Why not try making a lip oil that doubles as a lip moisturizer? It seemed logical enough to me, so I set about creating a recipe.

After all, DIY lip oil is perfect for wintery days at work, parties, and dates with friends, being that it doubles as a homemade lip gloss if you get the texture right.ย

So, in true DIY style, this is the result! And trust me, itโ€™s a good one.

In this post, youโ€™ll find a recipe for my very own lip oil recipe, which is super easy to make and leaves lips lovely and moisturized with a sweet gloss.

Using the roller ball top to apply the lip oil to my dry lips.

What is a lip oil?

A lip oil is like a lip balm and lip gloss blended together if you think about it.

Now, the main aim of lip oil isnโ€™t to leave your lips glossy, contrary to what you might have read elsewhere.

Instead, lip oil is created to moisturize your lips, adding much-needed care and attention to dryer areas, making it a useful addition to your beauty routine.

The great news is that lip oils usually contain healthier ingredients compared to other lip items such as lipsticks or lip glosses.

Things like natural oils and plant-based oils are added into lip oils to work in harmony with the delicate lip area.

And the best thing is, the recipe in this post contains only natural ingredients that are 100% good for you and your body!

How to make lip oil

What you will need:

Instructions:

  1. Add equal parts of castor, sunflower, and sweet almond oil to the roller bottle. I used an old dropper, but a small funnel would also work to prevent spills.
  2. Make sure to leave some space at the top to add any essential oils (if you choose to use them.)
  3. Next, add the ten drops of essential oils and secure the rollerball top.
  4. Shake well, and itโ€™s ready to use!

How to use lip oil

I recommend using your lip oil whenever you want your lips to look and feel a touch healthier. So, maybe that means all the time!

I use this lip oil nearly every day. Itโ€™s that good, leaving my lips looking refreshed and cared for, which I love.

You can use it in the mornings after youโ€™ve put on your makeup while getting ready for work or use it before going to bed for an overnight moisture boost.

Really, use this lip oil as and when you need to. Simply apply it like you would a lip balm or gloss, and youโ€™re there.

Benefits of lip oil

The benefits of a natural lip oil include:

  • Lip nourishment
  • Lip hydration
  • Reduced dry flakes
  • Glossy finish
  • Easy to apply and correct
  • Fragrance options
  • Customization options

Essentially, the benefits of a lip balm or lip moisturizer are similar to a lip oil, but lip oil gives that gorgeously glossy finish, too, which I know many of you will love!

What is lip oil used for

The main use of lip oil is to moisturize and nourish your lips. Therefore, you could use lip oil as a replacement for lip balm or, even better, as an addition to lip balm.

One of my favorite lip balm recipes is actually this one here, which is vegan-friendly.

If you suffer from dry lips in winter, letโ€™s say, Iโ€™d suggest you apply lip balm first, then add a layer of lip oil over the top. They work great together!

This will drench your lips in moisturizing goodness and lock it in, meaning your lips will be ready to face those icy elements.

FAQs

Is a lip oil better than a lip balm?

I think itโ€™s not about which is better, as lip balm is a different product than lip oil.

Of course, both of them moisturize and hydrate the lips, but the finish is different. A lip balm is more muted, with a less glossy finish, whereas a lip oil has a gloss.

Itโ€™s personal preference as to which to use – or why not use both at the same time for a double moisture hit?

Who should use lip oil?

Anyone who wants to have moisturized lips and a subtle gloss effect in the process would benefit from using lip oil.

Theyโ€™re particularly popular with women because of the glossy finish.

Just remember, as with any new product, do a patch test first before using it to ensure itโ€™s suitable for your lips.

How do you store lip oil?

Store it in your makeup bag away from sunlight or in a cabinet that isnโ€™t too hot. Avoid keeping it in your bathroom as it tends to steam up, possibly causing lip oil to spoil early.

Itโ€™ll last for up to one year in its roller bottle if stored correctly.

Why these ingredients?

Castor oil: According to this source, castor oil is excellent for the face, extremely moisturizing, and is perfect for dry lips.

Sunflower oil: This oil is gentle and non-comedogenic, and studies show its effectiveness on dry skin.

Sweet almond oil: This popular oil made it in this recipe because of its ability to deeply penetrate the lips and provide some protection from UV rays. I also use this in my shower oil recipe!

Lavender essential oil: I chose this oil strictly because of the scent! If you want to leave it out, by all means! Or substitute it for your favorite essential oil.

However, please note that most citrus essential oils are photosensitive and should not be applied to the skin if exposed to the sun.

Hello! I just made a bunch to give for gifts, I filled the roller bottle up, then added only 5 drops of lavender. I tested it out and it was very strong and burned a little. Is 10 drops ok to use? My bottles were a little smaller than 10 ml.
Just asking before I start passing them out! Lol

    1. Laura says:

The amount of drops that should be used will depend on the size of the bottle you are filling. The amounts listed in the blog post are for a 10ml bottle.
