This sweet strawberry homemade chapstick is made with simple, all-natural ingredients to protect your lips from the weather, keep the lips hydrated and soften the skin.
Making your own chapstick is super easy to do and very cost-effective. Just pennies per tube.
I have been making my own lip balm with essential oils for a long time and recently decided to make a strawberry flavor one. Did I ever mention I have an 8-year-old daughter?
She is obsessed with chapstick, homemade nail polish, and all things girlie. As a crunchy mama, I had to come up with a way to make chapstick that is flavored without any toxins or chemicals. It is going straight in her mouth, I mean lips, after all!
HOW TO MAKE CHAPSTICK AT HOME
Making your own chapstick is very simple and one of those DIY’s that I put off for a while, not knowing how easy it was going to be. If you have ever made any homemade whipped body butter or homemade lotion, you should already have everything you need to make chapstick.
For this chapstick recipe, we are going to be using coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax. After probably an unbelievable amount of time and research, I settled on using dried fruit for the added flavoring.
Now I have only tested dried strawberries for this chapstick, but I would think almost any similar dried fruit would work just fine. Or there is always the option to scent your chapstick with essential oils.
Lastly, you will need chapstick tubes or small lip balm containers to store your chapstick. I prefer the traditional chapstick tubes for easier application.
HOMEMADE STRAWBERRY CHAPSTICK
As I said, we are using dried strawberries to flavor the chapstick. It will give off a lovely sweet aroma, taste delightful, and give it a natural red tint, which is fun.
All you have to do is blend up dried strawberries into a fine powder by using a food processor or blender. The fine powder will then be added to your other ingredients to make an all-natural flavored chapstick.
Be sure you are using dried strawberries that do not have any added sugar or ingredients; plain strawberries will work best! To make your chapstick brighter in color, you may want to remove strawberry seeds by straining the powder through a fine-mesh sieve.

INGREDIENTS
- ¼ cup freeze-dried strawberries
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- Lip balm tubes (this recipe will fill about 12 tubes)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Make strawberry powder by blending up dried strawberries in a blender or food processer. Blend until fine and smooth.
- Place the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil in a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can make one by putting a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water.
- Once all the ingredients are melted, remove from the heat and add in strawberry powder. Work fast as the mixture will harden quickly after being removed from the heat.
- With a small funnel, pipette, or old medicine dropper, fill the lip balm containers with the mixture.
- Let tubes sit at room temperature for a few hours until cooled and completely hardened before capping them.
BEST INGREDIENTS FOR HOMEMADE CHAPSTICK
In this recipe, I use equal parts coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter. If you don’t have shea butter, you can substitute it for cocoa butter or mango butter.
COCONUT OIL
Coconut oil has moisturizing properties making it great for chapped lips.
Coconut oil is very gentle and can be used on sensitive skin. If you have a coconut allergy, you can omit it from the recipe and use double the amount of shea butter. It will make a softer chapstick and will work best in a small container instead of a chapstick tube.
SHEA BUTTER
Shea butter is used in many ‘lip’ related DIYs, including my homemade vegan lip balm, making it the perfect ingredient to add to your chapstick. It can be used to promote beautiful skin and moisturize lips.
Shea butter can be swapped for cocoa butter or mango butter in this recipe. Cocoa butter and mango butter are both very moisturizing and can help with dry, chapped lips.
BEESWAX
The beeswax is needed to get the correct texture and it also has great benefits for your lips. It can create a protective layer leaving your lips soft and hydrated.
To make a vegan chapstick, you can use soy wax in replace of beeswax. Soy wax is a softer wax and makes a slightly different texture than beeswax, but it will still work great for chapstick. I also use beeswax in my homemade eyeliner to make it water-resistant.
STRAWBERRY POWDER
Strawberries contain alpha hydroxy acids and vitamin C making it a great fruit for the skin. The added strawberry powder can fight oily skin, nourish the skin, and help brighten the skin.
Strawberries can be used in summer body scrubs and face masks. With a good source of vitamin C, strawberries can help reduce signs of aging. As always, it is best to test a small area of skin in case of any sensitives.
HOW LONG WILL STRAWBERRY CHAPSTICK LAST?
This chapstick will last up to 6 months if stored properly. Be sure to keep out of direct sunlight to keep your chapstick from melting. It will be OK at room temperature but will not withstand high temperatures as the coconut oil, and shea butter can melt.
CAN I ADD IN ESSENTIAL OILS?
Several essential oils are safe to add to your chapstick. Oils like lavender, peppermint, and chamomile are my favorites. Be careful with citrus essential oils as they are photosensitive and can cause skin sensitives if used in direct sunlight.
If you decide to add in essential oils, you will only need about 15 drops for this recipe. Essential oils are very concentrated and a little goes a long way!
CAN YOU MAKE CHAPSTICK WITHOUT BEESWAX?
Yes! You can make chapstick without beeswax or soy wax. It will change the texture and will be best to store in a small lip balm container rather than a chapstick tube.
Replace the beeswax with cocoa butter or coconut oil to make a hydrating chapstick without any wax.
Or try this homemade hydrating lip oil.
How effective is chapstick
Conventional chapsticks may contain ingredients that will actually dry out the lips. However, this homemade chapstick is extremely effective in hydrating and sealing in moisture. For really dry, flaky skin, try exfoliating the lips first.

Have you ever used freeze dried berries
in a body butter, can you actually do this, will it work?
Laura says
I have not tried it in body butters but they are very similar to these chapsticks so I think it will work! I need to try that!
Anne says
Re coconut oil is it the hard coconut oil that comes in a bottle (I feel this is it) or the liquid? I’m new to this!
Thanks
Laura says
If it just says coconut oil then it is regular coconut oil, recipes that call for fractionated coconut oil (the kind in the bottle) will say FCO. 🙂

I tried to make these using raspberry powder….but I also used soy wax and grapeseed oil instead with the shea butter they did not solidify after 30 minutes what did I do wrong…but they are a pretty color…..jan

Sounds like you did a different recipe than the one I shared, I have not tried that so maybe that is why it didn’t turn out.
