Say hello to fuller-looking eyebrows in minutes with this DIY eyebrow tint! Using natural ingredients, eyebrow tint will give you long-lasting results and beautiful, defined brows.
As someone who has lighter hair, my eyebrows can easily look nonexistent.
Regularly applying homemade eyebrow growth serum has helped thicken them, but my blonde brows still don’t pop the way I’d like.
I wanted to darken my eyebrows so they would frame my face better. I love the look of fuller brows and feel an instant confidence boost after darkening them!
There are always temporary options like eyebrow pencils or tinting your brow gel like I do with my homemade eyebrow gel. I try to keep my daily routine as simple as possible, though, so I decided to try an eyebrow tint.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how fast, easy, and effective homemade eyebrow tint is! It only takes me a couple of minutes to dye my eyebrows and I love how they look every single day without any additional effort.
How to Make DIY Eyebrow Tint
DIY eyebrow tint is easy to make and apply in just a few simple steps! Think of it like my tinted lip balm recipe but with a bolder pop of color!
Keep in mind, this recipe is for a single serving and the tint should not be stored. I just whip up a batch right before I’d like to use it and I’m ready to go. Because it’s such an easy recipe, I don’t mind making it fresh each time.
Key Ingredients:
- Aloe vera gel: Aside from the fact that I absolutely love aloe vera, this is going to act as the base for our tint. It has a gel-like consistency that helps hold everything together and creates a smooth paste for application.
- Cocoa powder: This works alongside charcoal to achieve a more brown shade. The amount of cocoa powder you use will affect the final color. More cocoa powder results in a lighter brown tint.
- Activated charcoal: This is your main coloring agent. It provides a dark tint that can be adjusted based on the amount you use. Be careful though, a little goes a long way!
- Vitamin E oil (optional): I do like to add a touch of vitamin E oil to this DIY. Even though we use such a small amount, it really does help to smooth out the consistency and prevent any clumping. If you don’t have any, no worries, it will work just fine without it.
Note: The cocoa powder and activated charcoal amounts may be adjusted to match your preferred color.
Eyebrow Tint Instructions
Step 1. In a small bowl, add the aloe vera gel, cocoa powder and activated charcoal.
Step 2. Mix well with a small spoon until the consistency is smooth and no clumps remain.
Step 3. If you’re using vitamin E oil, add the drops now and mix it in thoroughly. The consistency should be thick and paste-like, but not runny.
Step 4: Carefully apply to your eyebrows using an applicator brush!
How to Use Eyebrow Tint
- Wash and dry your face, ensuring that your eyebrows are very dry. Brush the brows to prepare them for tinting. (Image 1)
- Apply the dye gently using an old mascara brush or a new spoolie brush. (Image 2)
- Wipe off any excess dye around the brows with a washcloth or a cotton swab. (Image 3)
- Leave the tint on for 2-10 minutes. The longer it’s left on, the darker your eyebrows will be.
- When the time is up, wipe the tint off using a damp rag. Note that I have a dedicated rag I use for this, but if you don’t, I recommend a dark-colored rag as a white one may stain. (Image 4)
Helpful Tips
- I suggest leaving the eyebrow tint on for just a few minutes your first time and going from there. The longer you leave it on, the darker your brows will be.
- It’s a good idea to do any shaping to your brows before applying the eyebrow tint.
- If you feel your brows are too light after tinting, apply another round of tint, as many times as needed to achieve the right color. You can leave the tint on longer or add more activated charcoal to darken the dye.
- If your brows are too dark after tinting, you can gently wash your brows a couple of times to speed up the fading process. Next time, make a lighter tint or leave it on for less time.
- It’s always a good idea to perform a patch test before using new products. Apply a bit of the tint to your inner arm and watch for adverse reactions.
- You can optionally apply a layer of castor oil or coconut oil to the brow area (around your eyebrows) before applying the tint. This will make it easier to prevent accidental staining of the skin.
What is Eyebrow Tint?
Eyebrow tinting is the perfect way to have darker brows without daily care! Eyebrow tint is a semi-permanent dye meant to darken and enhance eyebrows.
It darkens all of the fine hairs on your eyebrows, making it very effective at boldening eyebrows. However, it only dyes existing brow hairs, so tint won’t help with patchiness or bald spots in the eyebrows.
You can have your eyebrows tinted at a spa or cosmetics studio, but why not do it yourself with simple, nourishing ingredients? Tinting your own eyebrows is shockingly easy and they look incredible! Plus, it’s a great way to save a lot of time and money.
After some experimenting, I have achieved the perfect recipe for natural, DIY eyebrow tint! It uses simple ingredients that are highly affordable and effective. With just a few minutes of work once every week or two, you’ll have bolder, darker eyebrows without any daily maintenance!
FAQ
You can darken your eyebrows with a brow pencil or tinted brow gel as part of your daily makeup routine. For a longer-term option, eyebrow tinting can be done at home with eyebrow tinting kits, hair dye, henna powder, or this simple DIY recipe.
This depends on several factors, such as how often you wash your face and how much you sweat throughout the day. I find that my eyebrows stay tinted for a week or so and I’ll redo them as needed. Typically, conventional brow tints will last up to a month!
Eyebrow tint may fade if it’s exposed to abrasion, chemicals, or even sunlight. If you want to make it last as long as possible, wear a hat when you’re in the sun, limit time spent swimming, and avoid using harsh or exfoliating face washes on your eyebrows.

You can increase the amount of cocoa powder to darken the shade.

Hi, is there an Activated Charcoal that you can recommend?
Laura says
Eyebrow tint can last at least a week on your brows, depending on two factors. First, the longer you leave the tint on during application, the longer it will last. Second, frequent face washing can shorten the lifespan of the tint.

So, would this possibly work for eye lashes too? I know you would need to be careful not to get it In the eyes but boy would it be great for me. I have blonde eyebrows and eyelashes they are there just totally unnoticeable. I don’t wear makeup around the farm and I always look like I have no features and death warmed over. I might try it if you think it could work.
Laura says
It could possibly work for eyelashes, but be very careful! Eyebrow tints are specifically designed for that area of the face. If you do try it for eyelashes, I would first, avoid getting any in the eyes, and second, perform a patch test!

This is cool! How long does it last?
Laura says
This lasts at least a week and up to a month!
