This sourdough french toast recipe is absolutely delicious and will quickly become a family favorite. French toast is the perfect weekend breakfast and it’s even better for brunch.

Over the weekend, my husband made french toast, and I realized I didn’t have my favorite recipe on the blog.
Sourdough bread makes delicious french toast. The bread holds up better when soaked in the batter. And when using sourdough bread for french toast, you can slice the bread as thick as you want. It has a delicious tangy flavor that pairs well with the sweet cinnamon sugar in the french toast.
Making your own sourdough bread isn’t hard, but you will have to plan ahead as it needs time to rise. I like to make several loaves at a time and then use one just for french toast because it is that good!
Why We Love Sourdough French Toast
Easy breakfast: When I need something quick to make for breakfast, sourdough french toast is a go-to. It’s quick to prepare and cook.
Meal prep: Sourdough french toast is also great for making ahead! I love to make a big batch one morning and have breakfast covered for the next couple of days.
Crowd-pleaser: Everyone in my family loves french toast, especially my kids! You can top it with so many different toppings, making it perfectly customizable for all tastes. If you want a kid-friendly breakfast recipe, this is it!
Sourdough Bread for French Toast
You can make your own sourdough bread if you have an active starter. Like most bread making, it will require some kneading, rising, and baking. The main difference between sourdough bread and regular bread is that you won’t need yeast for this recipe.
The sourdough starter will act as the yeast and make your bread rise, how cool is that? I have had a starter in my home for years and love to use it to make sourdough pancakes, sourdough pizza, bread, and so much more!
If you don’t have a starter, you can still make this recipe with store-bought sourdough bread. Heck, any bread will work. I just find homemade sourdough bread to be the most delicious.
What You’ll Need
- Sourdough bread: Using sourdough bread for french toast gives it a unique and delicious flavor! You can use your own homemade sourdough bread or purchase it from a grocery store or bakery.
- Eggs: Dipping the bread in an egg mixture gives french toast its signature texture and flavor while adding some protein to this breakfast staple.
- Milk: I just use whatever whole milk we have on hand. Feel free to use an alternative milk if you’re avoiding dairy.
- Honey: I like to use honey instead of sugar to sweeten this breakfast recipe. It adds a delicious flavor and I prefer to avoid white sugar when I can.
- Cinnamon: A dash of cinnamon gives this french toast a decadent and rich flavor.
- Vanilla extract: A must for french toast!
- Butter: For cooking the French toast, and also for spreading on it!
Variations and Substitutions
- You could use maple syrup, coconut sugar, or organic cane sugar instead of the honey. All of these will add a delicious sweet flavor! Just use the same measurement for whichever sweetener you choose.
- You can use any type of bread that you like, I just prefer the flavor of sourdough!
- Feel free to add any spices you like! Nutmeg, cardamom, or pumpkin pie spice are excellent choices.
