Most of us shampoo our hair regularly, but are we giving our hair what it really craves?
In this post, you’ll find there is a shampoo here for everyone, whether you wash daily or need a clarifying treatment now and then.
A couple of things before we get started. You won’t need to make every single recipe. That’s my job! These recipes are the culmination of over a decade of making my own hair products, either for myself or family members.
So, unless you’re a conditioner-washing pro, there’s bound to be a recipe here that fits your hair routine perfectly. Let’s dive in and find your perfect match!
Homemade Natural Shampoo
This recipe is your go-to for a simple, all-natural shampoo that’s perfect for everyday use. Plus, it’s easily customizable!
For those with dry hair, I do have a few tips for tailoring this recipe to your specific needs. And to top it all off, you can personalize it with your favorite natural essential oils for a delightful scent!

Homemade Chelating Shampoo
This chelating shampoo recipe is designed to target hard water buildup and remove residue caused by hair products like hairspray.
It’s a powerful solution, but remember โ not everyone needs it! If your regular shampoo just isn’t cutting it, this recipe can help.
However, keep in mind that chelating shampoos can be strong and strip away natural oils with overuse. Use it sparingly, and get the full chelating shampoo recipe here to see if it’s the right fit for you.
DIY Dry Shampoo
This dry shampoo recipe is a lifesaver for in-between washes or those mornings when you just don’t have time for a full hair routine.
It absorbs excess oil and refreshes your scalp, leaving your hair looking and feeling cleaner for longer. While this is a great option for a quick refresh, it doesn’t replace a traditional shampoo.
It won’t remove dirt or styling products, and using it too frequently can lead to buildup. Try this regular dry shampoo recipe or my newest favorite: cornstarch dry shampoo.
DIY Clarifying Shampoo
This clarifying shampoo recipe is a deep-cleaning treatment designed to remove product buildup and environmental pollutants from your hair.
It’s very similar to the chelating shampoo but without the shampoo texture. Remember, while a clarifying shampoo can leave your hair feeling refreshed and lighter, it can also be slightly drying.
It’s recommended to use this type of shampoo only as needed and to follow up with a hydrating conditioner to replenish moisture and keep your hair healthy and manageable. Get the DIY clarifying shampoo recipe here.
Homemade Dandruff shampoo
Dandruff can be annoying, to say the least. Thankfully, this recipe makes getting rid of dandruff easy.
Many people have had success using apple cider vinegar to tackle the pesky flakes. I also incorporate natural ingredients like argan oil and tea tree oil to help soothe the scalp.
Please note that while this recipe can help alleviate dandruff symptoms, it might not be a permanent solution for everyone. If you have persistent dandruff, consult a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Homemade Shampoo Bars
Are you looking for a sustainable and travel-friendly way to cleanse your hair? Shampoo bars offer a plastic-free alternative to bottled shampoos and come in two main DIY options: DIY cold process shampoo bars and melt and pour shampoo bars.
Cold process bars require a bit more time and experience to make but offer a wider range of customization.
Melt and pour bars are perfect for beginners, as they involve melting a pre-made base and adding your desired ingredients. Whichever method you choose, shampoo bars are a great way to enjoy a concentrated lather that leaves your hair clean and refreshed.
Homemade Coconut Rosemary Shampoo
This luxurious recipe delivers amazing results, but be aware โ it doesn’t store well! Enjoy it fresh (up to a week in the fridge) for its incredible benefits.
Coconut milk nourishes, while rosemary oil stimulates the scalp and promotes hair growth. Perfect for normal to dry hair. If you have oily hair, consider using less coconut milk or following up with a hair rinse.

DIY Beard Shampoo
This is a gentle yet effective beard shampoo. Unlike hair shampoo, this recipe helps remove dirt, sweat, and product buildup without stripping away natural oils or causing irritation. It’s a favorite among my husband!

DIY Dry Shampoo Spray
Have you ever felt like typical dry shampoo leaves a dusty film on your hair? This DIY dry shampoo spray is the answer.
This recipe skips that problem entirely. I use arrowroot powder dissolved in alcohol to create a clear, effective spray that absorbs excess oil and refreshes your scalp without the white mess.
Just spritz it onto your roots, let it dry briefly, and style your hair as usual for a quick refresh!
Homemade Soap Nut Shampoo
Embrace a natural and sustainable hair care option with soap nut shampoo! These little pods contain saponins, which create a gentle lather that cleanses your hair without harsh chemicals.
Soap nut shampoo is perfect for all hair types and is one I love using regularly. While it might not lather as much as traditional shampoos, it leaves your hair feeling clean and refreshed.
Don’t forget the best part: making your own is super affordable!
