Hand Soak Recipe

To make this lovely hand soak, you’ll need the following:

Ingredients:

  • Two cups of brewed chamomile tea
  • One tablespoon of honey
  • A small bowl

Instructions:

Step 1: Bring two cups of water to a boil. Brew the chamomile tea (1 tea bag per cup) and let them cool to a warm-ish temperature. You can leave the bags in while it cools down to let all that chamomile goodness infuse into the water.

Step 2: Next, stir a tablespoon of raw honey into the tea. You’ll want to stir it well so the honey dissolves completely.

What is a hand soak?

A hand soak is a moisturizing solution that you place your hands into for around 15 minutes at a time, allowing the moisturizing properties in the hand soak to work on your hands. It’s a bit like a nail soak for your hands in that respect.

Hand soaking really is a great way to improve the appearance of your hands, too.

A good hand soak (such as the one in this post) helps soothe and soften dry, rough hands, removing dead skin cells, reducing redness, and deeply nourishing the skin, leaving hands looking and feeling amazing!

How chamomile is good for your skin

Chamomile is a pretty, daisy-like flower that’s been used for centuries for its medicinal properties

It’s a natural skin-soother and skin-toning agent, all packed into one tiny package.

Chamomile’s properties help reduce redness, swelling, and itching, while its antioxidant properties protect the skin from further damage caused by free radicals (that can contribute to premature aging.)

Chamomile also helps keep the skin clean and free from unwanted bacteria, while its soothing properties help calm and relax the skin, meaning great things for dry, tired hands in the depths of a snowy winter!

How honey is good for your skin

Honey contains natural humectant properties that allow it to attract and retain moisture from the air, effectively hydrating the skin and preventing dryness.

This is so good for the skin during the cold months when dehydration sets in, and we all feel our hands becoming tight and flaky.

Beyond its moisturizing abilities, honey possesses other qualities that actively combat skin infections, promoting better skin health overall.

Tips for softer hands

While hand soaks are a fantastic way to soften dry hands, there are other things you can do to retain that soft and smooth appearance once the soak is done!

These are some extra tips that I do at home to keep my hands looking and feeling great:

  • Shielding your hands from harsh chemicals. Wear gloves when cleaning, doing dishes, or working with harsh chemicals. This helps to prevent your skin from becoming too dry and irritated.
  • Moisturize your hands all the time!! Apply a gentle homemade moisturizer to your hands throughout the day, especially after washing them. For bonus points, put your hands in cotton gloves for around 10 minutes after moisturizing to boost hydration effects. (like this DIY hand mask)
  • Exfoliate your hands once a week. This helps improve the skin’s appearance and makes hands feel smoother. You can exfoliate your hands with a homemade sugar scrub or a loofah. Just don’t exfoliate if you have broken skin, as exfoliation may cause further damage.
  • Avoid very hot water: Hot water dries out your skin worse than anything! Use warm water instead when washing your hands.
  • Wear gloves when it’s cold outside: Cold weather dries out your skin, so wearing gloves when you’re outside in cold weather is essential.
  • Eat a healthier diet: Eating a diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help improve your skin’s health.
  • Drink plenty of water: Drinking water keeps skin hydrated from the inside.
  • Use a humidifier: A humidifier can help to add moisture to the air, which can help to prevent your skin from becoming dry.
  • Limit the use of antibacterial soap and antiseptic skin cleansers: These both strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. Use a gentle soap instead.
  • Use a cotton towel to dry your hands: Cotton towels are much softer than paper towels and better for the environment too.

Alternative options

You can make a hand soak from different ingredients if you want to. Simply soak your hands in any of the following for 10-20 minutes.

  • An olive oil hand soak
  • A coconut oil hand soak
  • Lemon juice and egg yolks soak
  • Aloe leaf juice hand soak
  • Any nut oils you like, such as an almond oil hand soak
  • Epsom salts with added flower petals and a nice essential oil blend

Summary

So there you have it! An easy, quick, practical DIY hand soak that works great and that you can enjoy right away.

Believe me, taking care of your hands is an overlooked thing by many people, yet it really ruins your day if your hands feel out of sorts.

Yet when your hands are soft and smooth, you’re more likely to feel good about yourself!
