Made with soothing essential oils, they can help relax the muscles and give your body a nice cooling effect. Plus, they will leave your skin soft and moisturized.
This recipe is complete with just 4 simple ingredients: coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, and essential oils. I also used a glass bowl, saucepan, and silicone molds to make the bars in. No special equipment needed.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR MUSCLE AND JOINT DISCOMFORT
To make these lotion bars soothing for the joints, we are using essential oils. There are a number of different oils that are great for reducing joint and muscle discomforts.
I’m going to be using a blend of oils for maximum benefits. Below is a list of essential oils that I recommend adding to your soothing lotion bars.
PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL
Peppermint essential oil is very cooling and soothing for the muscles. It contains menthol, which can help with inflammation, tension and ease discomfort. Peppermint essential oil should always be diluted before being applied to the skin as it is very concentrated.
Adding a few drops of peppermint oil into the lotion is a great way to dilute and benefit to the joints.
MARJORAM ESSENTIAL OIL
Marjoram essential oil is well known for the benefits it has for easing muscle and joint discomforts. When applied topically to the area of concern, it can help reduce stiffness, soreness, and spasms.
FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL
Frankincense is a very calming, soothing, and relaxing essential oil. Because frankincense can relieve tension, it makes a great natural solution for a hurting back, stiff neck, achy joints, and discomforts. Apply topically to the area of concern.
It can help with a healthy inflammatory response inside the body when taken internally or applied topically.
HELICHRYSUM ESSENTIAL OIL
Helichrysum essential oil helps with a healthy inflammatory response and can reduce muscle discomforts. When applied topically to the area of concern, it can soothe and relax joints and muscles.
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL
Lavender is a well-known oil to help with sleep, stress and calming. Just like it can help relax the mind, it can relax muscles and joints. Lavender oil is a very gentle oil and would be a good option for children experiencing discomfort.
Add a couple drops to some lotion and apply to the area of concern. The oil is very soothing and calming.
HOW TO MAKE A SOOTHING LOTION BAR
Making a basic homemade lotion bar is very easy. The lotion bar can be made with as few as three ingredients: coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax. And I simply customize it with essential oils for the effects I want.
I use equal parts of the three ingredients. Depending on how many bars you want to make will determine how much of each ingredient you will want to use.
You can then add in essential oils to make the bars soothing for muscles and joints. Try adding in different oils to make calming lotion bars for sleep or bug repellent lotion bars for summertime.

INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup beeswax
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 15 drops of essential oil (choose from the list above)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Add the shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil to a double boiler over medium heat. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can make your own by placing a small glass bowl over a saucepan of water and bringing it to a boil.
- Once ingredients are melted, remove from heat and allow them to cool slightly—about 5 minutes.
- Add in essential oils of choice. I used 3 drops each of peppermint, lavender, helichrysum, marjoram, and frankincense.
- Stir until all ingredients are well combined.
- Pour into silicone molds.
- Allow the mixture to cool and harden completely. Pop the lotion bars out of the molds.
- Store in an airtight container.
HOW TO USE A LOTION BAR FOR MUSCLE AND JOINT DISCOMFORT
This lotion bar can be used on the hands, feet, or body. The base ingredients are safe for the face; however, several of the essential oils are not. I recommend following a different recipe for a homemade face moisturizer and using this lotion bar on the body.
The lotion bar is designed to reduce muscle and joint discomfort, stiffness, and tension. You can apply the lotion to the area of concern as needed throughout the day.
When the lotion bar is rubbed on the skin, it will melt slightly; you can then massage it into the skin like you are using my DIY massage oil. After you are done using it, store it in an airtight container.
HOMEMADE LOTION BAR WITHOUT BEESWAX
If you want to make this recipe vegan, you can substitute the beeswax for soy wax. Or you can omit the beeswax altogether. However, if you make this without beeswax, it will be more of a cream than a lotion bar.
The beeswax will firm the lotion up and make it a solid bar rather than a creamy texture. If you decide to make a cream instead of a bar, I recommend whipping the ingredients with a handheld mixer to make more of a body butter DIY.
You can skip the silicone molds and store the lotion in an airtight container such as a mason jar.
HOW LONG DOES HOMEMADE LOTION LAST?
These lotion bars are good for 6 months to a year. It is important to store them in an airtight container and out of direct sunlight to extend shelf life.
These lotion bars are safe to store at room temperature, but they may melt in high heat or direct sunlight. You can store them in the refrigerator if you live in a hot climate or during the warmer months.
You can add an antioxidant like vitamin E antioxidant or rosemary antioxidant to help extend the product’s shelf life if desired.

I will be trying this blend of oils but instead of making a lotion bar I think I will try this in a carrier oil. Back in August I infused some of my dried cayenne peppers in olive oil. I will give that a try to add a little extra kick. My husband has horrible knee pain and inflamation after a busy day..

For the amount of oils and wax you have, the essential oils don’t even add up to 1% (72 drops); most pain formulas are 3-5%. You may need to increase the EOs to get relief. HTH

These things are miraculous! I made my first batch almost exactly the way it says, except I weighed the shea, beeswax, and coconut oil instead of measuring by volume. I weighed out 4 ounces of each one. When I was finished with the melting and adding the essential oils, I poured the mixture into empty deodorant sticks. It’s super easy to rub onto the skin that way, and it made slightly more than five sticks.
I fell back in December, and I’ve had a bum shoulder ever since. Other topical products alleviate the pain and stiffness for an hour or two at the most. This relieved my pain and stiffness all night long and into the next day. I’m never going back to the other topical products again!

These are such a great idea! I’m going to try them with the deep blue oil, I love the deep blue cream (it works extremely well) but I don’t like touching it LOL, so using the person’s idea in the comments to use a deodorant container is perfect.

I tried this diy today and I love the outcome. I added frankensense oil and lavender oil. I suffer with lupus and the joint pain can be really painful. This actually helps the pain and I can use it anytime I like. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the recipe. I made these just the other day, but mine came out soft. I set them in my laundry room for several hours. To test them, I lightly pressed on the top. It gave way ever so slightly. We’re they supposed to do that? I assumed they’d be harder. I ended up putting them in an old (clean) yeast jar. I’d use a few more drops of oils next time for myself. I have a high tolerance for pain unfortunately. The bars didn’t quite relieve my discomfort. How can I adjust the recipe to make them more solid? Thanks! Oh, I am using DoTerra oils (the best in my opinion).
Laura says
I would place them in the fridge or freezer to harden them. They should be solid. Also, you can add in more essential oils to make them stronger.

Also for me after I’ve finished my newly started get fit idea .

I made these lotion bars, but cut the recipe in half. And I put them in the round containers you used in your foot balm recipe. A half batch filled 2 containers. I gave one container to my husband & one container to my dad to try. I am excited to see how they like the lotion. I will keep you posted. I love your blog & YouTube channel. Thanks for the recipe!!
