I am currently writing this post during quarantine and my hair hasn’t seen a blow dryer, hair straightener, or curling iron all month, but this to will end. I can’t wait for the day that I can get ready again and go somewhere other than the backyard or woods.

My hair care routine is pretty basic. I use homemade natural shampoo and homemade conditioner twice a week and DIY dry shampoo in between as needed. I wear my hair straight most the time and mainly let it air dry. However, when I use heat on my hair, I like to make this DIY heat protectant spray first.

It can help to keep hair healthy and soft, smooth, and undamaged. I love to make my own hair care products, so I know what ingredients are in the products I am using and I can be sure they are safe.

HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY

Over time, using blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners, and even really hot water can cause damage to the hair.

Heat protectant is a product that can reduce damage to the hair when used before blow-drying or styling with heat. It can come in the form of a spray, cream, or serum. Most heat protectant products do not have to be washed out after applied.

I personally prefer a spray, as it is easiest to apply. I am all about easy, especially when it comes to fixing my hair!

DOES HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY WORK?

It short, yes, it does! As with any products, some will be more effective than others. With all hair types being different, it is important to try and see what works best for your hair.

The spray will form a protective barrier over each hair strand to protect it from heat styling tools and blow-drying. Heat protectants will also moisturize your hair, which can help with dry hair, split ends, and breakage.

HOW TO USE DIY HAIR PROTECTANT SPRAY?

After showering, spritz the DIY heat protectant spray into damp hair, be sure to cover all of the hair from roots to tips. You can apply a generous amount of heat protectant spray to the hair before blow-drying and then mist the hair lightly before curling or straightening.

To make your own heat protectant spray, you will need fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and conditioner. You have the option of adding essential oils to the spray for extra benefits.

FRACTIONATED COCONUT OIL

Fractionated coconut oil is different from coconut oil, as it does not solidify. It is important to use FCO instead of melted coconut oil because coconut oil will solidify in temperatures below 76 degrees.

FCO is tasteless and odorless. It is a very light oil and has many health benefits. FCO is very moisturizing and conditioning to your hair and protects against split ends while helping with unruly hair.

SWEET ALMOND OIL

This oil has a slightly sweet and nutty aroma. This oil can cause skin irritation to anyone with a nut allergy; it can be replaced with jojoba oil or avocado oil if needed. It has a medium consistency and is known for its moisturizing properties.

Sweet almond oil is loaded with vitamin E and vitamin A keeping the hair healthy and moisturized.

CONDITIONER

You will need a small amount of conditioner to add to your heat protectant spray. Any conditioner will work for this, and you can use the kind that you are currently using. I prefer to use my homemade natural conditioner.

Using a DIY leave-in conditioner spray can also work as a heat protectant.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils can be added to your spray for scent, benefits, and protection. My favorite essential oils for hair are lavender and rosemary. Peppermint, tea tree and lemongrass also have great benefits for the hair. These essential oils may help to strengthen and lengthen the hair too.

You can add multiple oils or a single oil to your heat protectant spray.

HOW TO MAKE HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY

The only tools you will need to make the spray is a spray bottle and a funnel. If you are adding essential oils to your spray, it is important to use a glass or metal spray bottle. The funnel will make it easier to get the ingredients into the spray bottle without spilling.

HOW LONG DOES DIY HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY LAST?

Anywhere from 1-3 months depending on the ingredients used and how you store it.

If you used distilled water, the spray will last longer than if you use regular tap water. Also, rosemary essential oil will act as a natural preservative and will make the spray last longer if using.

You can also store in the refrigerator to extend the shelf life.

HEAT PROTECTIVE SPRAY WITH ALOE VERA

If you have extremely oily hair and prefer to make a spray without the carrier oils, you can make a DIY heat-protective spray with aloe vera. Instead of using water and carrier oils, you can mix together aloe vera juice, conditioner, and essential oils.

This spray can be used the same way as the other spray.

  • 5 drops essential oil

When you say a “conditioner”, is it restorative or leave in conditioner?

Hi, I’m going to attempt the aloe vera spray. It recommends 1/4 cup aloe vera, but the recipe above calls for 1 cup water. Is the aloe spray for a smaller bottle? Thanks!

Yes it is a smaller recipe.

Yes! Any carrier oil will do.

    Hi Laura ๐Ÿ™‚
Very lovely post! I have two questions:
In your paragraph “does heat protectant spray work?” you answered with “it short, yes…” but I think you meant “in short”. Also can I ask you where you buy your conditioner from?

Thank you! I will fix that. I have a recipe for a homemade conditioner on my site.
