I’ve had my fair share of hair loss; I understand the struggle. After each of my babies was born, I dealt with postpartum hair loss that lowered my confidence and left my hair looking limp and thin.

I’ve tried many, many natural remedies to stimulate hair growth and I’ve found that simple is often best! Some of my favorite recipes for hair growth only require a few ingredients, like my two-ingredient rosemary oil or this easy essential oil spray.

Making your own hair growth spray is so simple. You will be blown away by how well it works for encouraging hair thickness and strength. I am combining the best essential oils for hair growth to help your hair grow naturally.

I personally noticed a difference in my hair after using this spray. If you’re dealing with thinning or slow-growing hair, you might find it helpful as well.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • It’s easy to make: You don’t need much to make this great hair growth spray. Just a few minutes of time, some water, and a few essential oils are all it takes.
  • It’s natural: Essential oils are a great natural alternative to commercial hair growth products.
  • It works: I personally noticed a difference in my hair thickness after consistent use of this spray following postpartum hair loss.

What Goes Into This Recipe

Ingredients to make hair growth spray: cedarwood, lavender, peppermint, frankincense, tea tree, and rosemary essential oils and water.
  • Filtered water creates a clean base for this spray. It helps maintain the spray’s consistency and prevents unwanted residue buildup in the hair.
  • Frankincense essential oil is known as the “king of oils” and really is the jack of all trades. If in doubt, use frankincense. It has wonderful benefits for the hair and scalp.

How to Make Hair Growth Spray

Adding essential oils to a glass spray bottle with a dropper.

Step 1. Add 8 drops each of lavender, peppermint, frankincense, rosemary, tea tree, and cedarwood essential oil to a 4 oz spray bottle.

Pouring water into a glass spray bottle with a small metal funnel.

Step 2. Fill the bottle the rest of the way to the top with filtered water. Secure the lid and shake well before each use.

Note: When using essential oils, it is best to use glass, metal, or HDPE, also known as plastics number 2. This is because essential oils can dissolve certain plastics over time. Be sure to make your DIY in an essential oil-safe spray bottle. You can also download a FREE printable label in my member resource library!

How to Use Natural Hair Growth Spray

It is best to use this spray when your hair is wet right after you get out of the shower. It will not make your hair greasy and can be used right before styling your hair for the day. You do not need to rinse it out.

Simply spray directly on the roots and use your fingers to massage it into the scalp. For best results, use the spray three times a week.

How long you need to use it really depends on the person and hair type. If you have very damaged hair, you may need to use it longer to notice the same results as someone with healthier hair.

Try using it consistently for 2-3 months.

It is also important to use homemade natural shampoo and homemade natural conditionerย to maintain healthy hair and scalp!

Recipe FAQs

Can this hair growth spray be used for men?

This spray can be used for men or women following the recommended drops of oils.
Or, if you would rather not use essential oils, you may try this bay leaf water recipe to help with hair growth.

Will this spray help with dandruff?

While this spray is primarily designed for hair growth, a review in the NIH found that essential oils such as tea tree and rosemary have major potential to be developed for dandruff control.

Is this hair growth spray safe for colored hair?

This hair growth spray should be safe for most hair types, including color-treated hair. However, itโ€™s always a good practice to perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying the spray to your scalp.

Can I use essential oil hair spray while pregnant?

I personally used essential oils when I was pregnant and didn’t have any sensitives to them. However, I always recommend consulting with a doctor before use. Pregnancy hormones can potentially cause hair loss during pregnancy or right after. I definitely noticed this after each one of my babies were born. Using this DIY hair growth spray can be very helpful for that hair loss. However, since this spray contains peppermint, it is important to note that peppermint essential oil can affect milk supply. If you are near the end of pregnancy or nursing, you may want to omit the peppermint or try homemade rosemary spray for hair growth!

Do essential oils really help hair growth?

Some studies have shown promising results. For example, one study revealed peppermint oil has been found to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth.

Do you need a carrier oil like castor oil or just water (filtered, purified?)?

I love this spray! I use it daily and have been for 2 months now. I love the way it smells and how it feels after using. I spray daily before combing my hair every morning (I wash my hair only 1/week and use heat also only once/week). I believe my hair looks healthier, shiny and have no dandruff or scalp itch. My son on the other hand continues to have dandruff. Heโ€™s 11, I have tried ACV rinse, lemon rinse and this spray. Will continue to research to see what helps him.
I will update this if necessary.

    Hi Laura,

Thank you for the Articles and recipes. I learn so much from you :). Bless you.
I am breastfeeding and wonder what other oil I can use instead of peppermint please? How much Wit E drops should I use for this recipe to preserve it? If using the Wit E would you decrease the amount of other oils? How do you know the mixture has gone bad please?
    Thank you so much.

    Best wishes!

    1. Laura says:

No preservatives are needed. Since you are breastfeeding, I would simply leave out the peppermint from the recipe.

You can add an antioxidant like vitamin E antioxidant or rosemary antioxidant to help extend the shelf life of the product if desired.
