This DIY hair growth spray is a refreshing and invigorating treatment made with a blend of essential oils. Requiring only essential oils and water, it’s quick and easy to make!
I’ve had my fair share of hair loss; I understand the struggle. After each of my babies was born, I dealt with postpartum hair loss that lowered my confidence and left my hair looking limp and thin.
I’ve tried many, many natural remedies to stimulate hair growth and I’ve found that simple is often best! Some of my favorite recipes for hair growth only require a few ingredients, like my two-ingredient rosemary oil or this easy essential oil spray.
Making your own hair growth spray is so simple. You will be blown away by how well it works for encouraging hair thickness and strength. I am combining the best essential oils for hair growth to help your hair grow naturally.
I personally noticed a difference in my hair after using this spray. If you’re dealing with thinning or slow-growing hair, you might find it helpful as well.
Why you’ll love this recipe
- It’s easy to make: You don’t need much to make this great hair growth spray. Just a few minutes of time, some water, and a few essential oils are all it takes.
- It’s natural: Essential oils are a great natural alternative to commercial hair growth products.
- It works: I personally noticed a difference in my hair thickness after consistent use of this spray following postpartum hair loss.
What Goes Into This Recipe
- Filtered water creates a clean base for this spray. It helps maintain the spray’s consistency and prevents unwanted residue buildup in the hair.
- Lavender essential oil can produce more hair follicles to help thicken and strengthen hair.
- Peppermint essential oil is great for the hair as it promotes hair growth and thickness. The cooling effect of peppermint will feel great on an irritated scalp.
- Frankincense essential oil is known as the “king of oils” and really is the jack of all trades. If in doubt, use frankincense. It has wonderful benefits for the hair and scalp.
- Rosemary essential oil is the top oil for hair growth and thickness. It helps to treat dry hair, as well as overly oily hair. Rosemary oil can also help prevent split ends and works great in hair oils such as my homemade hair growth oil.
- Tea tree essential oil promotes a healthy, clean-looking scalp. It can be used to help with a dry, itchy scalp and protect against lice.
- Cedarwood essential oil may promote hair growth and thickness, and strengthen hair follicles. It is a very thick oil and has a wonderful woodsy scent.
How to Make Hair Growth Spray
Step 1. Add 8 drops each of lavender, peppermint, frankincense, rosemary, tea tree, and cedarwood essential oil to a 4 oz spray bottle.
Step 2. Fill the bottle the rest of the way to the top with filtered water. Secure the lid and shake well before each use.
Note: When using essential oils, it is best to use glass, metal, or HDPE, also known as plastics number 2. This is because essential oils can dissolve certain plastics over time. Be sure to make your DIY in an essential oil-safe spray bottle. You can also download a FREE printable label in my member resource library!
How to Use Natural Hair Growth Spray
It is best to use this spray when your hair is wet right after you get out of the shower. It will not make your hair greasy and can be used right before styling your hair for the day. You do not need to rinse it out.
Simply spray directly on the roots and use your fingers to massage it into the scalp. For best results, use the spray three times a week.
How long you need to use it really depends on the person and hair type. If you have very damaged hair, you may need to use it longer to notice the same results as someone with healthier hair.
Try using it consistently for 2-3 months.
It is also important to use homemade natural shampoo and homemade natural conditioner to maintain healthy hair and scalp!
Expert tips
Mix and match your oils: Feel free to experiment with different essential oil combinations. While some oils are more effective than others for hair growth, you can explore various blends to find what works best for you.
Stay Consistent: Remember, hair growth takes time. Consistent use of your hair growth spray is essential for seeing results. Be patient and persistent!
Safety First: Always prioritize safety when using essential oils. Perform a patch test before applying the spray to your scalp. Ensure proper dilution of essential oils with a carrier oil. Its also recommended you consult with your healthcare professional before use.
Recipe FAQs
This spray can be used for men or women following the recommended drops of oils.
Or, if you would rather not use essential oils, you may try this bay leaf water recipe to help with hair growth.
While this spray is primarily designed for hair growth, a review in the NIH found that essential oils such as tea tree and rosemary have major potential to be developed for dandruff control.
This hair growth spray should be safe for most hair types, including color-treated hair. However, it’s always a good practice to perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying the spray to your scalp.
I personally used essential oils when I was pregnant and didn’t have any sensitives to them. However, I always recommend consulting with a doctor before use. Pregnancy hormones can potentially cause hair loss during pregnancy or right after. I definitely noticed this after each one of my babies were born. Using this DIY hair growth spray can be very helpful for that hair loss. However, since this spray contains peppermint, it is important to note that peppermint essential oil can affect milk supply. If you are near the end of pregnancy or nursing, you may want to omit the peppermint or try homemade rosemary spray for hair growth!
Some studies have shown promising results. For example, one study revealed peppermint oil has been found to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth.

I know it doesn’t say anything about a carrier oi, but what if I were to add a carrier oil like jojoba oil? Would that enhance the hair growth, or would it be fine without a carrier oil?
Laura says
It is fine without the carrier oil, but you can add some if you want!

Hi laura,
I would like to use only rosemary and lavender essential oils. So how many drops of each oil should i use for 4 oz water and i feel as essential oil doesnt mix with water do i need to add any emulsifiers to it because we are using very less amount of oil and it will be sticking to the glass bottle sides and get stuck inside spray so technically it would be very less amout of oil comes out of the spray when used.
One more thing i would like to know, how long this mixture would remain unspoiled after prepararion
Thank u
Laura says
I would do 8 drops of each. Just shake well before each use!
